One of the first men I met after joining East Side Baptist Church in 1991 was a man named Clyde Jones. Brother Clyde is dead now, and has been for a number of years. Clyde was maybe ten years older than I, but we hit it off pretty well. He had some family members by the name of Nix, and when he learned that Nita's maternal relatives were name Nix, he referred to Nita as "Kin Folks" from then on.

He was a country boy, and when he entered the Army early in WW II, he was asked if he knew anything about horses. He did, he told them, so they put him in the cavalry, in a tank.

Shortly after joining that church, I was talking to a newly made friend at church one Sunday evening, and somebody turned the subject to guns. Brother Clyde approached and hearing our talk, made the comment, "I've only got one gun. It's a 20 gauge shotgun they gave me when I got married."

With a feigned surprised look, I said, "Why, Brother Clyde, I never knew you got to keep it!"

He pondered on that a minute then began to chuckle.

I visited him in the hospital shortly before he died a day or two later. The last thing he ever said to me was, "Thanks for coming, Cowboy Bob."
