Is the Old Model 357 Flattop hammer the same hammer as the Old Model 357 Blackhawk or was there a difference in them. I just recently got a Flattop and would like to convert it back to original and need to know what to look for parts wise. Thanks

OM Blackhawks all have the same hammer. OM SBH hammers are different.

If my faded memory is correct,, there is a slight hammer nose height difference in the FT's & the Blackhawks. I'm on my back-up computer,, as my normal one with all my pics had the hard drive crash Saturday, so I can't easily pull up the picture showing the different hammers,, yet.

I'm working on restoring my stuff. I found the picture of the hammers I was thinking of,, and yes,, the FT hammer is slightly shorter. Now,, if I can just figure out how to get the files back on my computer.

From Left to Right…
Hawkeye,,, some like to think this is an Old Army,,, It’s not. The Boss on a OA is the same as the rest. The OA Nose is actually thinner too.
Super Blackhawk
Blackhawk 30C, 41M, 44M, 45C.
Blackhawk .357M
Single Six
Super Single Six
Bearcat

Another Stolen photo from I don’t know where but has some goon info., especially good between the two.

Maybe I'm missing something, the top photo shows the 30 and the 40 cal as the same hammer The bottom photo show them separately and having different dimensions. The bottom photo does not include the 357 Blackhawk which has a 2-3/16th length. So is the 30 cal the same as the 357 BH or does it belong to the 40 cal group?

Welcome to the Forum!

The top photo is the one most if us use as a guide. The second photo was used in a display and I believe was a little incorrect.

They are different, the reason I posted the second picture.
There is only ~1/16th difference between the 2-1/4 -vs- 2-3/16.
Not the best picture but gives you an idea.
Look closely at the top picture, for the 1/16” inch.

The Ruger Single Action Revolvers - A Shop Manual, Vols. I & II, by Jerry Kuhnhausen (Author) will give better/closer decimal measurement ranges, but I can’t locate my copy…🙄

FWIW: The 30cal hammer will operate just fine in a 40cal gun ,,, BUT the 40cal hammer has just enough that it can slap the rear sight, if bottomed out.
The 40cal hammer can also be trimmed just a tad to avoid the contact.
The 30cal hammer in a 40 cal gun is just a discerning eye thing, most won’t/don’t see it,,,

ALSO most don’t see the too tall hammer situation, but then they smack the rear sight,,, getting to look at the carnage..😩

Thank you all that replied. I do have one of each the one out of my 1968 357 Blackhawk measures exactly 2.180 and I have another for a Blackhawk the measures 2.240. There is approximately 1/16th of an inch difference between the two as G2 stated. I have no use for the 2.240 so if anyone does PM me.

Switchblade,, you don't have enough posts to use the PM feature yet. You've been a member long enough,, but you need more posts to use the PM feature.
When you do,, I'd like to talk to you about the hammer.
