My wife and MIL just made their regular stop in there for chicken fried steak this week. All I got was the doggy bag with the leftovers.Pretty much a Portland icon---sad to see it coming down after so many years.

The gas station in the little town I grew up outside of had 1 gas pump, full service. Abie Witmer had 2 bays in his garage, a 2 cent hard candy jar, candy and soda machines for when we could scrounge up a few soda bottles for the deposit. Plus a gun cabinet on the wall behind the glass counter. He'd have 20-30 guns tops, at 1 time. Ammo and accessories in the glass counter. And an old rolltop desk covered in papers. It was a wonderous place!
Dad bought me my 1st shotgun when I was 10, at 11 I could legally go hunting in Pa. It was an Iver Johnson Champion 16 ga single shot he bought from my Scoutmaster for the grand sum of $10, but was missing the front bead sight. Abie put 1 on for $1.10, iirc. I was in hog heaven! I still have it, shot some clay birds in a buddy's back yard with it last summer. I need to do some more of that these days..
That old IJ was my small game shotgun and deer rifle all rolled into 1, until I bought an old 7mm Mauser for $75 at the hardware store when I was 17. After shopping around, it came down to the Mauser, or a Savage 30-30 pump from Abie. I shoulda bought the Savage....
The Mauser had one of them new fangled Weaver 4x scopes on it, that completely fogged up when the biggest buck I'd ever seen poked his head out of a thicket along a trail about 50 yards from where I was sitting a couple of months later. Sold that durn rifle 2 weeks after I got home from that trip! I never trusted another scope till the .22 sights started getting a bit rough to see in the squirrel woods 30 years later. Necessary evil now.
A little off track, but 1 of my 'gas station' stories... No airplanes, tho.....

I saw at least one Mustang, probably 1965.
