In the midst of a hectic planting season GA got a text from the spouse of an old friend of mine. They were driving a 'new to them' RV from Florida to Montana  and would be passing through north MO around noonish. We met them and had a very nice 45 minute lunch and caught up a bit since we hadn't seen/talked with them for several years. Looks like he's in for the 2027 elk hunt if we find something.;)

The wolves ATE all the Elk. None left here.
Unlikely. Wolves don't kill because they're hungry. They kill because it's FUN.

Unfortunately, elk and other big game animals don't replenish their numbers as fast as prairie dogs do.

People that want wolves in "settled lands" are completely stupid. There's a very good reason that the "settlers" exterminated wolves.

As it turns out, my friend's Montana hunting area elk population has been devastated by wolves. He used to be quite a conservationist but his attitude has changed after seeing the results of wolf reintroduction. Thirty years ago, he was opposed to my SOS/SSS attitude toward predators in general.

Around here, only Marxists like wolves. Predator worship is something Hollywood has promoted.

I understand SSS, what is SOS in this context?

I will never understand the benefits of allowing apex predators to thrive. I’ve researched it and still don’t understand it.

Never Cry Wolf was a favorite book when I was a kid. Even then it seemed foolish.

They kill and eat what we eat. They kill and eat our pets and livestock. They kill and eat us. SOS, is just plain common sense.

Wolf attacks on humans are very rare. According to the interwebs, there have only been two non-rabies related fatal wolf attacks in the past 100 years in North America.

I'm seeing what a lack of predators causes. My neighborhood is overrun with whitetail deer. I'll find six or seven in my little 1/4 acre lot. They kill shrubbery, dig up yards, and cause traffic accidents. I'd welcome a few wolves eating them.

You're blaming the problems created by hunting regulations on the lack of predators.

I'd rather have the wolves than hunters.
But having a pack of wolves next door is worse than illegal immigrants. So best they give all the deer hunters a couple extra B tags. You won't get more hunters they will just get to take a couple of extra does while they're out stalking that big buck. Easy Peasy to fix.

I suppose someone will defend Great white sharks too?
As a matter of fact I will. First you have to understand I grew up swimming and diving with great whites, every time I went into the ocean. Only shark that ever acted aggressively toward me was a very large Tiger.

How could one possibly survive. Well first you need to understand a bit of reality. Something in short supply regarding many predatory animals, and thanks to a movie, sharks in particular. The beaches (especially the gently sloping sandy beaches humans like so much) here are all Great White pupping grounds. That's right mama Great White gives birth to live little sharks in the surf zone. The little sharks eat little fish, as the sharks grow, they move further off shore and eat bigger fish. Sharks like other ocean dwellers can be either residents or migratory. Great Whites can be both.

Regardless, every year mama sharks come close inshore and pup. This cycle has gone on since time immemorial.

You didn’t defend them you just wrote a book report about them.

Who are you to tell me about reality?

I understand they aren’t the man eater evil fish they are portrayed as.

Explain to me why the human race is better off with them than we would be without them.

Apex predators eat what we eat. We are competing with them. The fisheries are being depleted. They limit what we can harvest. Why not cut down on apex predators as a way to manage fisheries?

Actually in Jr High I did write quite a long report on sharks. As to the human race being better off without them, if that were a criteria we'd probably have only about 10% of the current population. The problem with that is who gets to decide who's in that 10%.
Babies that weren't "perfect would be killed at birth.
Folks with hereditary diseased would not be allowed to breed. And allowed to live only if they could serve some other use.
Old people would be eliminated.
That theory was even put on paper. It's call Eugenics. It's been practiced by all of the great civilizations, and most smaller ones as well.

Unlike land predators, humans have a simple way to avoid being lower on the food chain. Stay out of the water, heck, we weren't designed to swim anyway.

My wondering why we don’t eliminate apex predators to manage our resources is a far cry from executing babies.

What is wrong with you?

If you don’t have an answer just say so. Don’t deflect and redirect.

Apex predators eat what we eat.

Really?
