Film history[edit]
Poster for the 1935 Hopalong Cassidy film The Eagle's Brood
As portrayed on the screen, white-haired Bill "Hopalong" Cassidy was usually clad strikingly in black (including his hat, an exception to the western film stereotype that only villains wore black hats). He was reserved and well spoken, with a sense of fair play. He was often called upon to intercede when dishonest characters took advantage of honest citizens. "Hoppy" and his white horse, Topper

You either wore BLACK or White

William Boyd later recanted the myth that he wore black as Hopalong Cassidy, stating that he did in fact wear a blue outfit.

As a matter of fact, the original Hopalong Cassidy stories had him a gimpy legged, tobacco chewing, gruff old cow puncher.

So you are saying: William Boyd, as Hopalong Cassidy, never wore black during his entire movie career?
Maybe old Hoppy was color blind.

Except Ol' Hoppy wore dark blue, not black.

That's right!
It was black:

William (Hopalong Cassidy) Boyd - Another of the great Cowboy stars from the great state of Ohio. Leonard (Roy Rogers) Slye being another. Throw in Cowboy Copas for the Cowboy singer in the mix.

You can also include Roy as a crooner. He sang with "The Sons of the Pioneers" before he became Roy Rogers.

Hi folks,

The Black vs. Dark blue duds on Hoppy may be a B&W filming technical issue. The Dark blue may show up much better as "Black" than real Black duds. I believe real Black duds in B&W filming would show up as more grey than dark black.

This is similar to actors wearing light blue shirts in B&W programs, because they would show up as whiter whites than a real white shirt, which would show up as light grey.

As a kid back in the 50's, I saw Hoppy in a personal appearance. He was wearing dark blue duds.

Fifty seven years ago, a guy came around with a pony, a cowboy hat and chaps trying to sell pictures. It was too much,... mom couldn't afford it, and I really liked his painted pony. I think it left a mark...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiMWSBSSURQ

Then again,... these guys had some impact....

Jack Elam Hollywood bad guy for years was William Boyd's bookkeeper before he was a actor. Jack once said he was the only actor killed by John Wayne 4 times in movies. Jack also had a coffee table covered in Hopalong Cassidy collector coins that Boyd never handed out to fans.

I remember that guy with the pinto pony also. He sure got around and must have made a killing. Wish that I still had that photo. About that time, I was the proud owner a a set of Hopalong Cassidy dinner ware with pictures of Hoppy and Topper on each piece. Hoppy was wearing blue.
