Nuisance phone calls

It's called number spoofing. The number that shows up on caller ID is not necessarily the number that the call was dialed from. Many nuisance calls will use your area code when spoofing to increase the chances you will answer.

for the last few months, I have been answering the "This is Alisha about your credit card...Press 1..."

I try to keep the person on the line as long as I can. a lot of the times he reconizes my voice and hangs up. But I get the pleasure of knowing I wasted his time.

A couple weeks ago, when he reconized my voice, he went into a rant on how he was going to rape my wife and daughters!

I immediately called phone company to report a threating phone call and they refused to do any thing about it

My spam program on my phone blocks any call I receive
that is from someone who is not on my contacts list.
Why would I want to talk to someone I do not know?
It's really not that hard to take control of your phone.

Hiya is one app that I use on my iPhone.

Works good.

I had Call Control on an Android phone. That seemed to work ok too

I have gotten a few calls looking for my deceased ex-wife's boyfriend. I just remain silent until they hang up.

If you don't know the number, then don't answer.

OTOH, if you feel you must answer, then say "it's done, and there's blood everywhere. What do you want me to do next?"

I've got an older answering machine that has capability for three messages.
The first one is "Hi, this is Pat and I use the answering machine to screen
all my calls . . . . The second one says "If you want to be verbally abused,
leave a message." The third says "HI! Let's see, I want a large, thin crust,
double cheese, sausage and pepperoni, with . . . Ah . . . lets 'see . . .
and goes on for a minute, then hangs up (announce and hang up).

I've gotten messages that said they were going to use my first message
because it is/was polite but no nonsense. The rest of them have not
gotten any replies. 8)

I'll also mention that I have the ringer on the phone turned off, so I don't
hear it ring. It is only if they leave a message that I know the phone is
active. - - - P.S. to that is the phone keeps a log of calls received so I
know it is working and so I can see if there are any trends. Lately I've
been getting bunches of calls from a spam number that says it is from
CO, but if you call it back, it is a non working number. :D

We have Caller ID and Voice Mail.

If I do not recognize the number and name on Caller ID, I do not answer.

If I do not answer and the caller does not leave a Voice Mail mesage, the call really was not too important.

"If" the phone companies wanted to stop junk calls they could do it fairly easily. But that would mean a huge loss of income.

I'm not sure how stopping junk calls would decrease income. Phone companies generally don't get a "per call" payment. Anymore it's based on type of line and number of lines.

A friend just told me he got a call where he didn't recognize the number. He ignored it but it kept ringing so he answered...he can't resist spam emails, either.
He answered with, "Parts, please hold" and put the phone down and watched the end of the news on tv. Picked up the phone..."Parts".
The guy on the other end went into his script and my friend said, "Sorry, wrong number" and hung up.

My phone records any messages left by the caller if I do not answer. For a few years now I have not answered any call from a number that I don't recognize. If the caller does not leave any message, (the spam callers never do), I just erase the call and ignore it.

I got another robocall today. This one had a live person (with foreign accent) on the other end. He started his spiel, and I interrupted with "I'm sorry, we are about to experience a malfunction." Then I blew a whistle and hung up.

I deliver flowers as much as 60 miles from the store. If no one is home, I call the contact number from who knows where. They call me back-sometimes, so while working, I answer numbers I don’t recognize.

I played along with the call back to a message I was going to be arrested. My mission was to take as much time of theirs as I could and than blow a whistle. Then call them back throughout the day and do it again. They blocked me from the numbers they had used. No more calls for about 3 months now and before I did that it was weekly.
I used the "I am getting my CC out and will pay you, hold on a second". Put on shooters hear muffs and blow a whistle. Fun times.
