My wife and I decided to have barbecue today after church. The Three Little Pigs is our pit of choice. When we arrived we saw the front caved in and covered with black plastic sheeting. Well, it was open so we did get our barbecue, though Nita opted for catfish.

When I asked about the damage, they told me an older gent was parking out front and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal. Didn't open up the wall, but di push it in maybe three feet, and shattered the glass in the front door. There were customers eating their supper there but no one was hurt. In fact the driver of the car told them, "Looks like I'm going to be here awhile, so I think I'll have some barbecue."

An 'older gent', huh? I resemble that remark.
And we've been discussing the possibility of adding a single axle tractor and 26-28' hopper trailer so my hauling trips will be more productive. Not all are created equal. I feel sorry for the 'old gent'.

Horse feathers!
The idiot should NOT be driving (I'm just a hair away from 80, so I CAN talk).
He should have ben made to pay the dinner costs for everyone there!

Well, I let it slide, but the whippersnapper who told us about the incident uses the expression of "a little old man around sixty" ....................

Yeah, didn't sit too well with us, either.

It's only indirectly related to age b but it is not uncommon for this type of thing to involve diabetic with numbness in the feet to apply the wrong pedal , lacking the tactile feedback .

Many years ago- before the asteroid hit and took out the dinosaurs- I was a college kid working at a Round Table pizza joint. Lunch time: A woman came sailing into a parking slot, hit the meter, ran over it and impaled her brand new Caddie between the radiator and engine. The front wheels were about 8" off the pavement .
She told me she wanted to pick up her pizza to go...!
"You sure?" I asked. " There may be some people who want to talk to you."
She looked through the front window at her car and said, "yeah, you're probably right. I'll eat it here at the bar..."
Seemed totally unconcerned. The original Foxy Grandma.

This is how one man made the local police department a drive in: wait through the ad and watch.

Hi,

My Mom gave up her license at 85. She said she didn't want to embarrass me by being the little ol' lady who drove thru the front of my favorite donut shop. She was still driving a stick when she quit.

The guy at DMV who handled the changeover from driver license to ID card thanked her for making a wise decision. A lot of folks just don't want to admit their driving days are over, so I imagine he'd heard every story 100 times!

Alot worse places to be stuck. You have good taste in restaurants, I never miss a chance to eat there when I am in Tn.

I don't necessarily believe it's so much age as mental AND physical abilities. I still drive at 84 and my next door neighbor is 86 and still drives her Jeep. When I was having vision problems I didn't drive at night or when it was raining (my own decision). Just got the OK to drive again from the doc (I told him why I had grounded myself).

Years ago, I was at an office building looking down at the parking lot when I saw a car backing up at some speed and run into the car behind, then go forward again fast and smash into the car in front. The same car repeated the going forward and back more than a dozen times, until the engine died. I had it in my mind that the driver must have been an "elderly person", but when the driver of the car was pulled out, she was a woman in her 30's. Later, I saw in the news that her car had an anti-theft device that hooked to the steering wheel and the brake pedal. She forgot to remove it, started the car, put it in gear, panicked, and then the mess started. Ended up wrecking six cars. Seems like the same device was involved in several similar incidents, and was taken off the market.

Hi,

As I mentioned before, my Mom quit driving at 85. Before she quit, she'd buzz down to the local senior center a couple of times a week. They had a fellow who was there every day. He lived in a mobile home park about a mile away.

On his 100th birthday, he traded in his DL for an ID card. Someone asked why he was giving up his license. He told them "Most people don't even make it to 100, let alone still be driving. I don't really need to drive any more."

He bought a golf cart type vehicle to use going to the senior center. He was coming up on his 102nd birthday and they were planning a party for him. A few days before the party, he was headed home from the senior center, and was hit by a car. He didn't make it.

The driver of the car was a 97 yr old lady who'd been driving into the sun and didn't see him...

Now at the other end of the spectrum, a friend of mine is friends with an older couple. Dunno how old the wife is (my friend's "the baby" at 82) but the husband still pulls his Harley out most weekends to go for a Sunday breakfast ride with some buddies. He's 96!

Ya just never know!
