Not so funny thing at work...

Today I had to write a memorandum after spending a couple of hours with ISU (Investigation Services Unit), the unit responsible for internal investigations within the prison. They look into staff misconduct, contraband smuggling, inmate conspiracies etc. I can't share much because this is an ongoing investigation but today I became aware of a fellow employee bringing drugs, cell phones and tobacco to an inmate, putting money on her books and exchanging lewd photos with her in return for sexual favors. Sh*t.

This guy's career - and freedom - is toast. I will never understand behavior like this. This guy has 20+ years with the department. Now he's thrown it all away. Fool.

And I am pissed that he brought me into it by crossing the line on my watch. How dare he get me involved as a witness! It absolutely sucks that i have no choice but to turn him in. But it is a no-brainer on my part. How dare he jeopardize MY career with his misdeeds!!! Still and all, i would much rather not be a party to this, even though it goes with the territory. Sigh.

It always sucks when a co-worker betrays a trust. Just before I retired I discovered that one of my sergeants was stealing drugs from the evidence room. Most of the cases had already been adjudicated well before the theft but I had to notify the prosecutors to dismiss 6 pending cases due to the compromise of the evidence. I convinced the Chief to have the state police conduct the criminal investigation.

Yeah, that's a bummer to be taken for a ride by someone whom you've trusted/depended on.
I'm facing the prospect of firing an employee for simple ineptitude, intentional falsifying of time/mileage reports, and generally failing to perform acceptably. I've been compiling his indiscretions for a couple of years apparently w/o his even suspecting. Within such a small work group, this sort of thing can be a very sensitive process. This will most likely end my career also as it's already hard to replace employees and I'm getting too old to start over with another litter of new recruits.

It's hard to imagine working among prisoners, day after day, for twenty years. Maybe he wanted to get caught. Maybe there are more who haven't gotten caught yet,

Heck it's hard enough working with people who aren't in prison.

You are doing the right thing by turning him in!
I worked in the prison system with female inmates, they were OK but one of them tried to get another supervisor in trouble. There was an investigation and they found out the inmate was plotting against him. She got solitaire for a month or so. Always watch your back!

Wolfie,, it does suck that you've been put in this position. But,, know that doing the right thing isn't always the easiest. In fact, doing the right things in life are often harder than the easy, lazy, dishonest, or otherwise any wrong things.

Just remember,, YOU didn't do it to him,, he did it to himself.

I was a cop for several years and thats enough to change your attitude toward most of humanity, at least mine. I can only imagine working in the prison system! We all know how strong temptations can be. I truly feel sorry for the man to have thrown away so much for so little.

I spent 15 years, 3 months, 2 weeks, 1 day and 8 hours working in a maximum security prison as an Engineer. Nothing surprises me when it comes to convicts and staff stupidity. My job was outside the walls mostly but I did have to repair things inside the prison. I went from the prison system to the university system for a promotion to Chief Engineer and it took me about 2 years to relax over tool control. I found the source of several convict made shanks when 2 other people in my department were lax on disposing of accordion style air filters with metal rod frames. The frames were 3/16" round rods which sharpened into very nasty shanks. When I reported it to administration I was labeled a rat by the 2 who did not do their job properly. They left the dirty filters in a hallway where convicts had access to them instead of hauling them out to the dumpster outside the walls. They didn't get in trouble but there were over 50 shanks found that were made from the filter frames. I told my supervisor that I turned it into security because I didn't want to be responsible for someone getting stabbed by something that my department should have had control over. They were pissed because I got a light shined on 2 of their favorites. I was the one who got jammed up but the Superintendent and Deputy of Security backed me up so that the guilty ones could not mess with me over the situation.
