non-Ruger question (Rem 742)

I have an older Rem 742 in 308. The "ejection port cover" is broke. It is a small plastic piece. Is this just a guard to keep the action clean, and can the rifle be shot w/o this in place?


I see Brownells has this in stock, so will be ordering one soon. Still curious if it will affect shooting the rifle.
