New Vaquero 5.5 .45Colt

Greetings to all,

Just purchased from a friend a New unfired SS Vaquero with a 5.5" barrel in .45 Colt since he was thinning down the herd. With the purchase he also gave me a set of Wolf Springs that he never got to install and they are labeled 40/19. I've been reading many forums and other sources of information and there seems to be a disagreement with the weight of the spring in a totally stock gun. Some say 23, others say 17 and some even say 14. Could you experts out there give me an accurate number? I've written Ruger but haven't got an answer yet. This model doesn't have the lock under the grips like other examples I've seen. I'm just going to be target shooting with it and having some fun with the kids and grandkids and was wondering if I should install those Wolf Springs or is it even necessary? BTW, the trigger pull is a consistent 2 lbs 14 ozs with a lyman digital gauge. Thank for all your help guys.

I agree with C3Ranger,, leave it alone. If it already has a sub 3 lb trigger pull,, it's very good. We often advise folks to shoot a gun BEFORE making any changes. Of there is a problem,, THEN you can look at any modifications you may feel necessary.

On a different note,, I often leave factory springs alone,, and just "clean up" the action by careful smoothing of the internals. Makes a world of difference in a gun that needs a bit of help. Plus,, the original springs allow the gun to function correctly,, and a cleaned up action gives it a good feel.

Thank you for the advice ! First time owning a cowboy gun and looking forward to shooting it. Will be shooting cowboy loads since they have less recoil for the kids and myself, lol.

I'm pretty sure we are talking hammer springs here. I have never change a hammer spring on my Ruger single action revolvers but I did put in a Wolff 30 oz. trigger return spring in my Ruger Single-six, and that was the best upgrade I've ever made on one of my single-action revolvers.

Yes, we are talking about the trigger return spring and the hammer spring. The Wolf kit I just given with the gun is a 40 oz. trigger spring and a 19 lbs spring for the hammer. Out of the box I have a consistent trigger pull under 3 lbs by a few ounces.
