New Toy

Well I went and picked up a new toy today. It's not a ruger but a BFR 45-70 7.5". This is my second BFR and I really like them the other is a 475 linebaugh/480 ruger cal. 7.5" also. I love single actions and big guns so these are right up my alley.

I have one too, in .45-70. Mine is modified with a 1000 yard ladder sight for ridiculously long range shooting. 500 yards is about as far out as I can regularly hit the target, although I have hit my 920 yard target.

Well I tried it out this morning. It's a awesome shooting gun. I was very impressed with the accuracy and the recoil was not bad at all. I was shooting reloads that I had loaded in 09 they were 300 gr hornadys loaded with IMR4895 at 61.5 gr. with mag primers. I just was plinking and the sights were set very close from the factory with my loads. It's a nice shooting gun. I will really enjoy it I think.

The way my light Handi Rifle belts back with stiff .45/70 loads, I can imagine how much fun a BFR must be! :shock: :lol:

I bought one back in 2007 or 8. Mostly outta curiosity. Those BFR's are very well built and both of mine were excellent shooters. I sold it off after playing with it a while. If I was a hangun hunter, the 45-70 BFR would still be in my safe.

Well I took it out again today and shot it some more the sights were shooting a little high but when I went to set them the rear sight wouldn't adjust down. It was sitting high in the frame but was bottomed out. I came home and removed the rear sight completely under the rear sight is a squared place where the rear sight screw goes through I filed that part down some and got more down adjustment for the rear sight and now I have it adjusted dead on. After thinking about it I remembered I had to do the same thing to my other BFR in 475 linebaugh to get the sight set on it. When I bought it it came with a leupold scope mounted on it and I had to order replacement sights for it from Magnum research and I had to take some off the same spot in it to get the rear sight to adjust down enough. The rear sight is a ruger blackhawk sight the front sight is held in place with a screw.
