I'd sure like to see this in a .45 Colt model or maybe .480. Hope one is around the corner at a bit lower price.

Well, I do have a newer GP100 without "Sturm" on the barrel and it seems to be a good firearm.

I guess the reason I say "Sturm Ruger" needs to be on the barrel is because of the lack of quality control displayed over the last few years.
I'm not one to buy into "the customer service is the best" train of thought. Customer service should be a given with any manufacturer, and used as the exception, not the rule.

IMHO, Ruger needs to fix what they CURRENTLY do to acceptable standards and THEN work on putting new models on the market. After several years, Ruger has displayed no effort to insure a firearm leaves the factory up to the standards that Sturm, Ruger built their reputation on.

As always, your mileage may vary. :)

Just for the sake of information, I'll ask how it is you are sure of that. Have you actually seen & handled one? If so, what was your opinion on fit, finish, etc?

I fully agree with the criticism addressed to the deletion of Sturm's name and the "S" from the trademark and various Ruger products. I miss the "S" in the medallions on all the new handguns, and believe it is considerably lacking in respect for the guy who coughed up the money to put Bill Ruger in business.
 
I have several Rugers from the last few years. One of which is one of the most accurate handguns I've ever fired. Freedom Arms accurate. IMHO, 99% of the issues people encounter could've been eliminated with a thorough inspection before filling out the 4473, which should be done with any firearm.

Good Lord, Alexander Sturm has been gone a long, long time. Sure, his investment was important in the beginning and it was an honorable thing for Bill Ruger to do to leave his name in there for as long as they did but let's get real. It ain't Sturm that made Ruger what it is today.
 
Every page on Ruger's website, all the Instruction Manuals (including the one for the new gun here in question) and in fact all my New Model guns carry the inscription of Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. I have no idea what team of lawyers thought it would be a good idea to remove the "S" from the trademark "Phoenix" symbol, but IMHO it was in the poorest of taste. Makes no difference how long Mr. Sturm has been gone, Henry Ford has been gone a long time, too, and yet his name still graces the hood/grille ornament of all the products of his namesake company.

I have bought some New Models with the "S-less" grip medallions, but I did so with a mental tip of my hat to Alexander Sturm . . . who designed the "Phoenix", by the way.
 
I dunno, I kind of like it, but I'd have to see it up close and personal. Of course some range reports also. Price is what it is, if yea like something well enough price can be paid. Good to see a company making a variety of choices.
 
I've been hoping Ruger would do this for a long time. Redhawk upper with the more tuneable two spring action and grip stud frame of the SP/GP/Super style. I don't really care for this race version though. Do it in stainless, 4" or 5" barrel in 45 Colt and I'll buy one.
It figures they bring this out now...I just bought a 4" 45 Colt Redhawk.
 
I'm waiting for the 20 round Super GP-100 on a redhawk frame in 327.

I kid, I kid . I think it will appeal to a more "tactical" group. Im curious how the action feels on one of these custom shop guns.

I think they just wanted to differentiate from the visual of the frame extension on the SRH, which is equally loved and hated by many.

Please explain the "crowding" problems to me. I have not heard anything about this, and the 7 shot .357 GP100s are still listed in their catalog. Thanks.
 
There were some issues on the early ones with rimlock in the cylinder. Several were measuring rim diameter on their ammo to find the smallest od to keep the cylinder from locking up.

I was going to get one but just went with the old standard 6 shooter and don't really miss the extra round. I do believe that ruger has fixed the issue.

Thanks much. I was just doing some more reading in the revolver forum here and found a thread on the rimlock. I am surprised I have not heard of this on other forums I visit daily. Still reading, but I am curious as to what Ruger's "fix" is for this problem. I have an early (-4) 7 shot S&W L frame .357 and have not encountered the problem.

My question is what's with all the slots in the outer housing? Never saw that before. :roll:

Yep, and was incorporated into the SRH as well. Gives us considerable choice of aftermarket grips in addition to eliminating the "single spring" action of the Redhawk.

Looking at the picture, one can essentially see that the "new" gun is simply a SRH with the front end modified to be like the current Redhawk's "tube and sleeve" barrel arrangement. Clever bit of work, IMHO.

I'm just wondering if all the regular GP-100's are going to get the 'cheese grater' mod? I might have to trade in my old GP for a new 'cheese grater' model just to be cool. :D :mrgreen:
