New SR9

I have been hanging out her for a while now and I really like all the info here. I have gone from only knowing the end with the "hole" is the scarey end, well maybe not that bad, to being able to understand what the guys at the gun shops are saying.

Well I just bought a new SR9, and I really like it, picked it up Fri cleaned it Sat, shot it today and it is great!

Now my question is and i'm sure it has been beat to death, but some ammo has a rep on this forum as not working in the sr9.

So, What is a good "Target" round to shoot? brand, and weight, that won't break the bank?

The main 'bad ammo' you hear about is the cheap Winchester White Box. It doesn't mean your new SR9 won't fire it, just that, when people have had problems with ammo, frequently it turns out to be WWB. Enjoy your pistol, you made a great choice. Next you need to get the SR9c for concealed carry.
I and several others here have mentioned that we use a lot of Remington and Federal ammo, and we're talking about full metal jackets. But there are many other brands, Wolf, oh I'll shut up, others will have their suggestions and i'll get outa the way.
When you start talking about self-defense ammo the subject has way too many personal opinions, best thing to do is read some of the old threads, try the SD ammo brands that sound good to you, then fire a couple hundred rounds of that type to be sure it's reliable in your pistol.

Never had a problem with Winchester White box, Federal Champion, Federal American Eagle, Fiocchi, Sellier and Bellot, Blazer Brass, PMC, or any other ammo for that matter that I have shot in either of my SR9's that I have owned. Winchester White Box and Federal Champion can be purchased at Walmart for about as cheap as you can find ammo anywhere. Online prices on some brands may seem cheaper but when you add in shipping its hard to beat Walmart's prices.

Haven't had any problem so far with my SR9 with any 9mm round including reloads, Lawman (favorite), WWB, Wolf, or HPs of various manufacture. Very reliable pistol. I've probably owned 20 used handguns and purchased about 5 new handguns since the early 80's. Along with my Glock (sold it) and my S&W 639, the SR9 is incredibly reliable and accurate. It would place 2nd to the S&W 639 only because that's been with me for so long. Great pistol, I stole my brand new OD SR9 @ Hoffman's "Green Sale" last winter for $299! Best handgun investment I've ever made. Probably over 1000 rounds through it now and not one FTF or FTE. A little left @50 ft. out of the box (That's me-always has been), dead-on @30 ft. A superb handgun. The least consistent ammo in any caliber I've found in other guns would be WWB, UMC, and Herter's.

^ adding to Conn AK post. The last batch of Blazer Brass I bought shot about 1 1/2" to 2" high at 15 yards in my SR9 for some reason. I could switch from Sellier & Bellot and WWB to the Blazer and watch my grouping rise. The gun functioned fine, the grouping just rose!

I've shot WWB, Federal (FMJ & JHP), Silver Bear, Wolf, S&B and even TulAmmo thru my SR9 with no problems whatsoever.

Have shot many brands of ammo plus reloads from 95 to 147 grains in my SR9 and have never found any that it didn't like, some is more accurate than others but anything within reason functions well. All the striker fired Ruger pistols are great all around pistols.

I need to state that my new SR9 has eaten everything I have fed it and not one malfunction also. Steel Case, Alum Case or Brass. I still think my SR9c is more accurate but that may just be me. Just for play, find the cheapest ammo you can find and enjoy. These 17 rd mags are hungry so buy a bunch. I tend to buy the FED and WW at Wally World since they have the best price going with the 100 packs.

There is never any 9mm ammo at Wally World in Carrollton anyway.

One time I found some at the Carrollton store, but they could not find the keys. I test drive cars all over Lewisville and sometimes one of them will have the WWB. Of the thousands of rounds of the WWB I have used, I had 3 FTE's. All 3 occurred at a worst possible moment.
So if you see my Rem's on the shelf in N. Dallas, just walk away.

My SR9c and P95 eat anything, other than some really low power reloads I tried once. My favorite cheap factory ammo is Remington UMC.

I just got back from Walmart, they get ammo in on Wednesdays and if I don't get there quick all the 9mm is gone- except the WWB, and sometimes evevn it's gone. But I've been buying the UMC box of 250 $59.95, they were out of that already, so I bought 3 boxes (1oo-count) of Federal FMJs- 59.91- duh. I coulda been buyin' the Federals and getting' 50 extra for free.

The Federal and Remmington are cheaper thal the whitebox.. :?

Box of 100 Fed's was 19.97, even better'n 11.97 per 50. The WWB doesn't always work in my 9c.

I have yet to find something my SR9 won't feed, fire and send on its way in groups that show the limit is my skill, not the gun. Even with ten different magazines, various reloads, 25 year old ammo, brand new ammo, multiple brands and loads.

Darn thing shoots.

Glad I bought it.

Oh and yeah I know the gun has an accuracy limit. It's tighter than my ability to test it is the point.
