"New" Ruger Mark II

After seeing this nice Ruger Mark II MK512 (made in 1985) with a Blackhawk holster at a local gun shop for the past month, I finally broke down and brought it home. Nothing special about it other than I didn't have one like it and possibly the price. It was on consignment and listed for $299. I was able to buy it for $250 plus 6% tax and $2.00 background check fee.

I checked the Blackhawk web site and a nylon holster similar to mine for a Mark II with
bull barrel retails for $19.95.

Those are excellent guns. I have a couple like that,,, and they are shooters!

Very nice find at that price especially, congratulations. Am I correct in thinking
from the model number that yours is blue not stainless? Just recently I found a
LNIB KMK512 that as far as I can tell or my gunsmith is a totally unfired specimen.
I unlike some others do not dislike the European heel of the grip handle magazine
release, having owned several RST-4 specimens(that I still possess) I'm already
very used to that system.

You and me both, my MKII body count is up to 3 and climbing steadily
I hope, already have a Competition Target(6 7/8" slab side) and a
Government Target and a simple Target model 5 1/2", all stainless
now I need to find a MKII Standard in stainless if Ruger ever made
one and I'll be set.

Just a minor caution: I have the same gun in SS that came with a similar nylon holster. If the gun goes too far "in" (where it narrows around the muzzle) the front sight will sometimes catch the fabric causing near-impossible draw. Leather will cure this. Joe

Hi,

I have that very same MkII and Uncle Mike's similar version of that holster, as well. My gun was new, $260 plus plus plus, when I got it around 2001, so getting one for essentially that same price today seems quite nice a deal for a really good specimen. I probably wouldn't have flinched even at the opening price (and, yes, I'm one of those who thinks Ruger stopped actually "improving" the family at the MKII--arguments to the contrary noted and don't need to be rehashed.)

Stopped by the local gun store today and saw a nice Ruger Mark III, 22/45 bull barrel with scope rail, box and two magazines for $350.

What is the consensus, a good deal or not?

I have a ss standard mk11 short barrel 4-3/4 serial #214-41972 that has been my constent carry over the years trapping-hunting-fishing or just walking in the woods in all weather conditions, it even took a few dunking in the river and looks none the less for it. I put a set of hogue finger groove grips on it.

When I was still in the gunshop business, buying and reselling Ruger 22 pistols was a significant part of my business. There was(is) always a ready market for nice, clean Ruger MK & 22/45 pistols. Sometimes the "nice, clean" part can be overlooked at the right price for those who just want a reliable, accurate pistol. My old SS 22/45 (II series) certainly won't win any beauty contest but is as accurate and functional as any other.
