Well when it gets here I`ll be one...A couple questions for you. 1. does the Ruger Commander 1911 use the same grips that colt uses or are Ruger grips special in some way.... 2. are the black parts on the 1911 stainless underneath or are the just steel...I prefer stainless on all parts so I`m trying to determine if I will need to buy new parts or just remove the bluing. The grips should be the same hole pattern. The black parts are MIM and will turn whitish over time.
Thanks to all the guys that helped, I waited to buy this gun until the prices came down. I purchased it for $625 total so a few more bucks won`t hurt me. It's always been tough to get a Commander. Anyway it's on the way and what the heck I`ll have a good time doing what I like messing with my guns. Jim
By the way jimjc, I also just bought a SR1911 CMD for $625 (10 days ago) and had it shipped to my FFL. Waiting to pick it up and it's killing me! It arrived to the FFL on Friday morning and they haven't called me yet to do the paperwork. I called them and they said it hasn't been "processed in" yet... ugh.
Once they process and I go there to fill out paperwork, I have to wait another 3 days to pick it up (Illinois law). Patience is not one of my best qualities! Hope to have it in my hands this week to take it to the range this weekend.
I've already ordered an IWB holster from AlienGear (I have one for my SR40 and they are great), and a new set of Silverblack Dymondwood Grips. I'm only missing one thing......

If you do a search, or just read backwards in the 1911 forum, you'll find multiple threads in the last several months about the wisdom of 'building up', 'modding out', or just plain customizing 1911's. Of course you can do what you want .... its YOUR gun. However, many new 1911 owners (not that you are one) get their first 1911, and a Brownells 1911 catalog, and before they know it ... in $50 and $60 dribs and drabs, found that they had now have $1000 ..... in their $600 1911. Not only that .... it doesn't work anymore.
I've been shooting, and collecting 1911's for 25+ years, and was trying to keep you from making mistakes that I've seen many many times in the 1911 world, some of which I've made myself. Working on and tinkering with a 1911 until it doesn't work anymore, or finding out after dumping what they thought would be a 'few bucks' into their gun, that they could have had a much better gun, had they just spent all the money they now have into their $600 gun, in the first place.
You can take any advice given here ... or leave it. As I said ... its YOUR gun. The amount of members who have sent me PMs thanking me for my comments FAR outweighs the snipers who seem to follow my posts with such glee, hoping to find something else to pick at.
Great luck with whatever you decide to do with your gun. As I said originally .... the SR is a great gun, but I don't care for the two tone look either, which I've made no secret of.
One thing you might want to consider, is having the black parts cerakoted to 'match' the stainless. They won't really be stainless, but they'll look pretty close. There's an ad in the classifieds right now with holiday special prices from a company that does great work. Link below, FYI.

S.S. parts for the gun will run $100 plus my labor, I work pretty cheap these days haha. I sold most of my guns years back but started back so who knows what I`ll buy. The one thing I would do is shoot it at least several hundred rounds before you want to change things on it. You may find more things you want to change or less.

I probably wouldn`t change the main spring housing but if I did it`s about $35. So cosmetically your talking a bit over $135...I wasn`t to far off. oh those are Clark parts accept the slide stop...Jim

Looking for a Commander now. I have two full size Springers and would like to get a Ruger. One of the first things I would do is change the mainspring housing. I like the arched and just about all 1911's come with the flat style, but that is just my preference.
