I somehow don't see any of the Guards carrying that instead of their rifles.

I served in Korea with the 3rd Infantry, then attached to the 7th Infantry Division. Known as "The Old Guard" we had distinctive shoulder loops of black leather with buff colored leather woven so as to show three bands. We did not supply Tomb Guards from our unit, as that was a separate detachment, but we shared the same history. Somewhere I have the distinctive swagger stick carried by NCOs of the 3rd Infantry.

So far as I know the CQ is not armed? At least not when I pulled the duty.

Aha! "CQ" to me was duty pulled in the Army. It stood for "Charge of Quarters" and was duty an NCO pulled to be on duty in the company's orderly room during the night.
