Last week, I picked up a MK3 Hunter. I posted pics in my introduction post, but figure more pics is never a bad thing.
I have big hands, and this is a size-able pistol and HEAVY. Mixed feelings on the fiber optic sight:
I took it out Sunday and put 500 rounds of CCI Blazer through it. No FTF, FTE, or malfunctions to speak of. A few times, the bolt didn't hold open after the last round, but I wonder if my grip or something affected that. I was trying both hands, different grips, limp wristing, etc. to see if I could cause a malfunction but I couldn't duplicate the bolt closing. I love the fiber optic front sight at close range, but it is a bit large going out past 10 yards or so. And with the long barrel, it should be a great distance shooting pistol -but the sight obscures a distant target. Still, with its 6 7/8" barrel, it is very easy to hit what you are aiming at. The trigger is adequate, nothing to get excited about. I'd start thinking I could live with it, then shoot a magazine through my Challenger, and realize I'll have no love affair with the stock trigger. The trigger has too much take up, a little creep, then a heavy break. Then there is the overtravel before reset. It feels more like an arc than the straight back pull that I prefer. So a Volquartsen accurizing trigger kit is on the way. And a filler for the loaded chamber indicator. I will also be removing the magazine safety when I get inside it properly. There is NO REASON for this pistol to have a mag safety! At most, it should be an option.
One observation about this pistol that many have commented on is breakdown and reassembly. It's a pain to someone new to them, no two ways about it. You have to insert and remove the mag at different points, dry fire the pistol, etc. Also the gun has to be angled certain ways to make internals fall in line with where they need to be to reassemble, hammer has to be pushed down and ... well, hopefully I can do it blindfolded after a dozen or so reps. I am told that they are ridiculously tight from the factory and loosen up over time. Hoping that to be the case.
But enough critique about triggers and breakdown. It's a great shooter and fit and finish are better than expected. I busted the center out of paper targets and made cans jump as well as I could with my trusty Challenger. I'd buy it again and have a feeling my opinion of this gun will be even better after some part upgrades and desktop gunsmithing.
