Just want to say congratulations on your new GP100 purchase, they are just such a great revolver. I've owned several, and just bought a new one about a week ago, 5 in bbl stainless model. They are great! I'll defer to others more knowledgeable than me on cleaning recommendations, just wanted to say congrats on the new one.

Welcome to the club. Most Ruger revolvers could use a good cleaning from the factory. Remove the grips and if you don't want to take it apart flush it out real well with a solvent like 'Gun Scrubber' or 'Break-Free CLP' or kerosene or mineral spirits. Let drip dry and then oil in every opening with a tiny drop of gun oil like Rem-Oil. Read the instruction manual. Work the action by dry-firing both single-action and double action. Practice you aim and trigger pull. Become intimately familiar with the gun before going to the range.
You may notice the transfer bar and/or the ejector rod rattles a little if you shake the gun. That is completely normal and belies the sturdy function of the gun. Note if there are any sharp edges that might need rounding. I found some around the trigger and trigger guard. Bleeding after shooting magnums is a sure give-away. A little work with a fine stone or some fine sandpaper wrapped around a small dowel will do to smooth those sharp edges.
Shooting the gun is the best way to break it in but dry-firing helps also. After about 500 rounds you can evaluate if you want to do any gunsmithing to the springs or such. You can also check-out the Tech Videos on the Ruger website. http://ruger.com/resources/videos.html 8) 8)
