need advise on bolt function on 10/22

Have delightful Target 10/22 with the stubby hammered barrel. It is 'minute of fingernail' at 40 yards.

Problem is the unreliable and irregular bolt operation.

Sometimes it seems to retract between magazines and other times it wants to stay forward.

Sometimes it is difficult to insert/lock a magazine into place as it wants to fall back out.

Using several mags: stock rotary mag; an older Eagle and older Ram Line; and a new Ruger 25 round mag.

Doesn't seem to matter which.

Is there a basic '10/22 for dummies' guide somewhere on line?

There seems to be a standard reply for 22's about trying different ammo. Also how clean is the rifle? I can see potential issues with the non Ruger magazine. I've never had good luck with other brands. Have you ever taken the action out of the stock? It describes how to do this in the owner's manual. I'd perhaps try a thorough cleaning to start. Make sure the V block which holds the barrel is not loose. I'm sure others with more experience will have more to add. Good luck.

I had a similar problem and a member here directed me to the owners manual for instructions on disassmbly. Like the previous poster mentioned, my guns innards were quite loose. A good thorough cleaning and tightening of some screws and viola ..... my problem was solved.

Hope yours is a simple fix too.

My 10/22 only has trouble after extended use and lack of cleaning. Some ammo is worst then others, but none is great. You really need to take it down and clean the action every 500 rounds or so and clean the chamber out as well. Tight chambers and a bit of dirt will quickly equal failure to feed, failure to extract, stovepipes and other jams. My old 10/22 liked gun scrubber and a little tooth brush to clean it up quick at the range, newer models don't like gun scrubber due to painted actions and now plastic trigger group that don't like gun scrubber products. If you use spray cleaners make sure they are plastic safe versions.

not sure what screws, but in my case I've had the V-block loosen up over time. This caused the barrel to become loose which resulted in feeding issues between magazine and chamber.

Yep ~ that block that holds the barrel. Did I type that wrong? Does it require the tightening of an allen head bolt or something?

Yep, I'm pretty sure they are an Allen bolt... seems like someone recommended 15lbs on each but I just tighten them snug.... if they tend to loosen then lock tight is probably the solution.

I picked this up somewhere on the web (sorry, can't remember source), so take it for what it's worth:

** Ruger 10/22: factory torque for the stock/action screw is 20 in/lbs, and for the V-block torque is 20-25 in./lbs.
