Just picked up my birdshead .44 mag Vaquero today. Weight is dead on at 39 oz. I took some pics, but don't know how to post them here! Now, I gotta wait ALL work week, before I can bust a knuckle or two!

Welcome to the Forum!
Go to the "Gallery" section, look at the top, where the "sticky's" are, and there is one on how to post pics. You have to use a picture hosting site like photobucket to get them transferable to this place.

You're working your fast draw and thumbing in front of a mirror aren't you?
Get that back strap into the heel of your hand, and use enough thumb.

Just like it! I have long skinny fingers, so I can actually get all 3 fingers on the grip. I can also cock with my shooting thumb, without a bunch of gymnastics. Got a holster on order, be here next week.

Sounds like another old jarhead! USMC 75-79

Range Report;

Finally got the Vaquero out for its first shoot. To say I was disappointed, would be an understatement. At 30', using American Eagle 240 JHP, the gun shoots 6" low! Now, the manual claims the sights are regulated to 15 yards, but I have a hard time believing that 15 more feet is going to raise the impact 6 inches. I qualified Expert, in the Corps, with the 1911, multiple years, so I believe I do know how to shoot accurately. On the other hand, HSM 305 gr hard cast "Bear Loads" shot dead on.

Windage is spot on. The second knuckle on my social finger is a bit sore, from the back of the trigger guard, but I can live with that. Oddly enough, the heavier HSM loads seemed to recoil less than the 240 gr loads.

Be glad it shots low :) . Happy days! Once you settle on the load you want to shoot with it, just file down the front sight to hit POA and your golden. Way it is supposed to be. Both of my .45 Colt Vaqueros have got that treatment. However my .44Spec Sheriff shoots high. So eventually I need to send back to Ruger to get a taller front sight put on it. At the moment it has some JB Weld sitting on top to make it shoot to POA with the Skeeter Load.

That birdshead grip in .44 mag hurts me just looking at it! And I shoot a lot of .44 mag.

IMO, recoil is not bad. Of course, a quick second shot is a challenge. The second knuckle of my second finger kinda gets whacked by the back of the trigger guard, but it is tolerable. I shot 60 rounds in a little over an hour, and feel no ill effects, other than the hole in my wallet!

Nice vaquero in a great cartridge. I reload mine down for plinking and/or shoot "specials" for fun shooting!
Now you make me want to take it for another test drive.
Thanks for showing it to us! Happy shootin pardner.... :)
