Murder Mysteries

After watching the "Longmire" series on Netflix Mrs. haymaker and I were looking for another crime/mystery series to watch and we found "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries". It takes place in 1929 Melbourne, Australia. The stories are entertaining and the character development as the series progresses is great. After watching the entire series we then started watching "Murdoch Mysteries" which takes place in 1900 Toronto, Canada. Very entertaining with great character development.

I want to start watching "Justified" but what other series are all of you watching that you really enjoy?

I keep watching the "get my butt to work series". No, really, I just find most television to be extremely boring. Much prefer playing with the dogs, working on the ranch, fixing what needs to be fixed and just sitting on the deck watching the sun go down. I used to watch Law and Order religiously until they had a few politically motivated episodes about gun control. Oh well. I guess I will stick to watching football and baseball on the boob tube. Sorry I couldn't help with your question.

Not murder/mystery, but I got hooked on Downton Abbey. Foyle's War was good, but it appears to be gone now.

If you have access to show time, Banshee is pretty intense, but also a little racy. Also Ray Donovan.

On a less racy note, I enjoyed going back and watching reruns of Magnum PI, and Miami Vice. I found it pretty interesting the unknown young actors in Miami Vice that went on to other things. One episode has AL Bundy with a full head of hair and he looked about 19years old.

You need to check out Acorn TV... not the socialist thing... they sell / show all those English mysteries you are talking about....

Oh, and yes the Miss Fisher series is great... once you get past that gold plated 38 she carries.

And my wife and I enjoyed the Murdock ones too... kind of fun, the science part of it.

I enjoy Elementary. You can watch it free on CBS.com but you do have to put up with commercials.

Yep. Talking to people that remember the old days and they say that they had 1,2 or 3 stations to watch. And I'd tell them that we were lucky, we had 4, we also got CBC out of Windsor.

We get Dish and we're still lucky if we can find 3 or 4 channels worth watching. I think most tv is aimed at the under 18 years of age crowd.

My favorite Mystery series is Hercule Poirot circa 1936 in England and it is very well done.

Oher good ones: Nero Wolfe U.S. 1950s

The Jesse Stone movie series starring Tom Selleck.

The British series "Lovejoy" lasting around 6 years is excellent. Starring Ian McShane.

speaking of Murder She Wrote... am I the only one that noticed when ever the camera shot was on Angela Lansbury it was slightly out of focus? Then again, don'e many of us wish we could be the same?

I know they aren't murder mystery but no one mentioned Weeds or Shameless, two Showtime specials. They have character development and plot and a story... Shameless deals with social issues about a family living in complete poverty. Weeds was about a widowed housewife just trying to make ends meet. So in a way they both explore the social aspects of life and how different people make decisions about cancer and death of a family member etc. Yet through it all they stick together as a family should.

I cannot get past the "Miss Fisher" series' almost total lack of Aussieness! The characters all talk like Victorian English professors w/o the twang and earthiness that predominate in spoken Australian now -- much less the beer-drinking party-ready attitudes of modern day denizens of the continent. Also the scripted Modern Independent Woman angle is way overdone and Shillary-ish. The actors all sound like POMEs or Prisoners of Old Mother England as the guys on the street call the uptight upper class there. Even the settings are more English seaside town than outback.

Other than that the program sucks but the wife likes it.
