Moving the front site

The front site on my sr1911 is quite plainly off center, and so is my shooting. I know the back site is made to move, but I'd like to have the front site centered before moving anything else.
Is the best way to move this will a punch? Any other ideas? Anybody else have this problem?

The best way would be to use a Sight Pusher for 1911's.

On my SR1911, which I purchased May of 2011, the front sight was off-center to the right, as was the rear sight. But it shot to POI. However, I'm obsessed with symmetry and balance, so I centered the front sight and the rear sight. It shoots to POI, as it did before, but it looks much better to me.

FWIW, each of my three 10/22s came with the front and rear sights off-center, but shot to POI. As a matter of principle, I centered these, too. It's just a matter of esthetics. It appears Ruger really does ship their guns pretty much ready to shoot.

I understand what you are saying, but mine doesn't shoot to point of aim, so therein lies the problem.

My rear site is fine, only the front site slightly off center, best I can tell it shoots POA. I'm not that good of a shooter. I look at it if all get in face or 6 in circle thats good enough. Mine is not that obvious so left it alone, also I'm not a GS, although I do a lot of tuning I wont move things. I would like to get Rugers opinion in fact I will call. Josh at Ruger says don't move especially if it shoots POA. At the factory they align site to center of barrel. I will leave alone.

ndcowboy, at Sunday's gun show there was one overpriced SR1911. I saw your thread earlier and checked the front sight. It was way off to one side :shock: The rear sight wasn't centered as well, but I don't recall which way. No matter what Tipper said Josh at Ruger said, I'd get the front sight centered and go from there.

Neither here nor there, but I checked the sights on many other 1911's at the show and they looked well centered. It doesn't mean they will all shoot to dead center for all those that shoot them :wink:

Thanks for looking Cholo and for the update. My front site is way off too - it's not like I'm checking with a caliper and wondering about a couple thousandths of an inch - it is way off.
Life has been so hectic lately that I haven't pulled it out of the safe since this thread started, but I am certainly moving it when I get the chance.

Let me explain. Josh said if it was shooting POA and site wasn't off that much and it didn't bother you, leave it alone. If it bothers you send it back they will fix. He didn't give me details of fix.

My front sight was off a little also. I just used a brass punch wrapped with tape and tapped on the base of the sight. It moved fairly easy.

I just checked mine which shoots POA and the front sight is slightly to the right and the rear sight is the same. The rear sight is about 1/64" from being flush with cut out. The front is about 1/16 from edge. I wouldn't have even noticed if it wasn't for this post. lol I would have someone else shoot it and see if it does the same thing with them. And I hope you are checking this from a rest. Make sure your bushing is fit properly too. At what distance are you shooting is another question I have? Find out what distance Ruger uses.

$75.00 Bucks.? for a tool that one may only need to be used one time.? That's steep. there has to be other places that make this front sight tool for 1911's out there somewhere.?

Do you have a drill press and a drill press vise? If so, chuck a segment of brass rod flattened on one side into the drill press and secure your slide in the vise. Then use you drill press like an arbor press to move the sight.

This technique provides great control.
