GEEZ, it's been a nightmare.
First trip: Do you want a "real id" or just a license? No I didn't read the card that was sent as a reminder that my license was about to expire. What's a "real id"? Turn the card over and it tells you what it is. Didn't you read the card? Not past the part that said I need to renew.
Guess I need a "real id" since I travel around quite a bit and enter Federal buildings and secure locations. You'll have to show 2 pieces of mail proving you have a residence plus a birth certificate or passport.
Second trip: Today I went back with not two but THREE pieces of mail and the only birth certificate I ever had. Nope, not good enough. You can go to the county health department and get a CERTIFIED copy. That took 1/2 hour and cost $15 but it got what I needed.
Third trip: Back to the license office only to find that the computer was non-responsive. HOLY CRAP, how much more for a stinking DL?
Forth trip: Spent 2 1/2 hours chasing parts and returned to find a line and almost noon. The girl stuck with it and got the license input, took my $$, and gave me a piece of paper that makes me legal until the new plastic card is mailed.
So, here's my main problem with all this: I'm pushing 70 and have lived in this county my entire life but I have to prove who I am. An illegal can walk across the border and in some places get a free DL for the asking. There's something seriously wrong with this picture.

...to which I always say, "Vote early AND OFTEN!" And, quite possibly, it is going to get MUCH HARDER...I did read "somewhere" that an individual said the "he/she" was going to swim across the river, throw away all their IDs...swim BACK across the river and stand in-line to receive all that FREE STUFF and such as to which you referred to. I do believe it IS COMING. No offense to any persons, living or dead, places or things. No animals have been harmed during this rant.

The biggest problem was that you didn't read the entire card that you received. Had you done that you would have known beforehand was was required to acquire a "real ID". Failure to read and follow directions is not the MVA's problem.

I got a real ID when my license was about to expire. Here in Calif one needs a real ID to purchase ammo. The real ID license has a gold colored bear in the upper right corner. Luckily, I had my original birth certificate and utility bills to prove my residence.

The only problem I had was showing my social security card. I had my original SS card issued like 65 years ago, the only SS card I ever had. It was well preserved because I never carried it in my wallet. Well, the lady told me that was not an actual SS card. She kept muttering something about "you need the rest of it" or some crap like that. We went back and forth for what must have been 15 minutes. Finally I asked to see her supervisor. He came over and they talked for a few minutes and she finally approved my card. Oh, I forgot, I had failed to ever sign the back of the card and I had laminated it.

After that fiasco, I applied for a duplicate SS card and got one in the mail. Guess what, it looked just like my original card and it was also paper. It now resides in my safe deposit box and is signed but not laminated.

You guys might check you SS card. Did you sign it? Did you laminate it. My original card did not say "do not laminate" anywhere on it.

I can assure that the signature on the SS card I signed close to 60 years ago looks nothing like my current signature but by golly it IS signed.

Your SS card should also read, "NOT TO BE USED FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES" or the like.

A few years ago MO required a birth certificate to get a drivers license.
Hmm...had a license since about 1970.
So, I go to the Dept of Revenue (here that's the license bureau) and they tell me I need a birth certificate. I had licenses going back 20 years. Nope. Gotta have a b/c. But I don't have one.
Contacted the state and got a runaround so I said screw it. They had no record of me being born. Nor did the hospital. I drove for over a year until one day in MS I get t bone by a gal who ran a red light.
I got a ticket for no license.
Back to MO I go and contact the state. They tell me what I need to get a b/c. Into to the state capitol.
Nope. I need something else. I get it. Nope. I made FIVE trips without success. Finally I got a different clerk who told me all I needed was a govt document showing my city and county of birth.
Went to my county election commission. Nope. I went nuts trying to find something. I was even a state employee back in the 70s. Nope. So I tried the local FAA office. Yep! There it was! They got my application for license and sent it in a real nice folder with ribbons. No charge.
Took the papers the state gave me, got a friend to sign it, got it notarized and back to the capitol. That 8x10 piece of paper is my b/c.
Screw real ID. I don't need to fly anywhere and I probably won't need to go in any fed buildings.
If they want me there they can provide me with the proper stuff. DoD checked me out for my son's security clearance.

I have a MO CDL with hazmat which requires all of that plus fingerprints, school bus which requires a separate background check and fingerprints, and CC which requires another set of fingerprints, but I don’t have “real ID”, go figure.

I carry ID from 3 Federal agencies ( 1 retired). I've been vetted every which way and passed all the tests but still have to jump through the hoops.

Hmm, I read the instructions. Missouri department of revenue has a very detailed instruction list on its website, with all the acceptable permutations. It took about ten or fifteen minutes at the license office to get everything done. Not counting the 45 minute wait outside because of COVID-19 rules even with an appointment. That was about 4 months ago. I took my adult daughter to get hers a couple of months later. She read the instructions too. Five minute wait outside, about 10 minutes for the rest.
You know the MO DOR rules for vehicles, driver’s licenses etc. Very detailed and you have to follow them to the letter. Proof of this, that, and the other. Some notarized,
I got really tired of doing it the hard way years ago. Too many multiple trips with incomplete paperwork or documents. Go to the website, get all the details, follow them to the letter and make your trips much less stressful.
I am delighted that I can do most everything else like vehicle license renewal online and not have to go in at all.

I'm thinking this Real ID thingy is another part of that wonderful Patriot Act we all love and hold so dear.

Much like a concealed carry permit, voter registration card, drivers license and scores of others ..... usually only required of law abiding tax paying citizens.

Believe this is another crap sandwich from the Bush regime.

Back in 2012 the state of Tn said I needed a certified birth certificate, passport and voter registration card to renew my DL. They said I had a real ID. Fast forward, this year Is renewal year and my ID is not considered a Real ID, and yep I need all those same documents again. This year they won’t accept my Soc Sec card (original, and signed) because it has been laminated! Long story short my DL is a Real ID till they say differently. In a few years when cars/trucks drive themselves, will we need Drivers Licenses?

Think a passport will do if you don't want to get Real ID

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. The won't let you laminate it but they still make them out of plain old paper. You never have to renew a SS card so they expect that little paper card to last even if you got it 60 years ago. That's the government for you.

You do know that if you have a passport you don’t need real ID. Last time I renewed mine I got a passport card along with a regular passport. Good for flying and such. Don’t plan on bothering with anything else.

So 'they' won't let you into a federal building with out a real ID. So, say you are arrested or at least charged with a crime that will be tried in a Federal Court house... sounds to me that since you won't be let in they can't take you to court.... I wonder if you also need a real I.D. to get into a federal prison?

Sorry, just speculating at the silliness of it all.... I have a real I.D. was no trouble getting it.... but a number of years ago my wife wanted to transfer ownership of a vehicle she owned in her name to me... took a whole day back and forth. Finally I told the lady at the SC highway dept it was easier to get into the white house and the oval office to do work than it was to transfer the title of a vehicle in S.C. I was not only joking but telling the truth.

Why would I need a passport since don't plan to ever leave this country?
As far as reading/studying all that little print on the reminder card: maybe I should have but that doesn't make the process any less irksome. Also, let's not forget that the MO DOR "FAILED" big time when it "allowed" the leaking of CCW information from it's system. That's why I/we now have to waste even more time by making a separate trip to the county Sheriff's office to renew CCW permits---DOR couldn't keep that info confidential. Now they have even more info to scatter like leaves in the wind.

The Texas DMV sent my new ID license in the mail last time it renewed.

I didn't have to do anything.

I was going to say the same thing. My driver’s license was turned into the “real ID” type the last time I renewed online. Nothing special needed.

My MVA just reviewed my documents to get the real id. Nothing extra to scatter to the wind than they already do by selling your information to outside companies. Did you ever wonder how insurance and other companies get your address. No doubt different states are pickier with what they required. My original birth certificate that was laminated by my parents worked for me.

I got the card last month, assembled the necessary documents, and went to the DMV, where I found I had to make an appointment. My license is up this month; my appointment is December 29. I don't understand why I can't just show my CC permit, as it demonstrates that I am a citizen without criminal record. It would speed things up, saving time and money. Too logical for government bureaucrats, I suppose.

Having run into problems with birth certificate for hiring, I have notarized copies of hospital, city, and state documents. There are interesting differences. All list my name, date and city of birth, parents' names, and attending M.D. That's all that's on the city certificate. The state requires much more: county, institution, mother's residence; age, race and birthplace of parents; father's occupation and kind of business. In addition to what the city requires, St. Mary's Hospital, Manhattan, Kansas also lists parents' birthdates and the R.N. sister superintendent. It's also the only one with real ID: my right footprint.

strange. va law change says if I have a state i.d. card and hold an out of state drivers licence, as of this oct, I cant have both.
if I want a state i.d., I must surrender my state drivers license.
whats with that?
im from texas.
I own property in va and transact in va where they require a form of i.d showing my va address. now, I cant?

About 20 years ago I was visiting a friend in s california, and I wanted to buy some Black powder he took me to a mussel loader shop that sold it the owner wanted to see my DL and for me to sign something he got mad when I said NO and walked out.
