Memorial Day is upon us once again, and as has been the case for most of my 71 years on this planet, young Americans who raised their right hands have gone in Harm's Way to defend freedom have paid the price.
My family has been little touched by the wars of the United States, few served and few lost. My mother told me that my paternal grandmother said she lost an uncle or a great uncle-or a couple of them-at Gettysburg (Union troops), my mother mentioned a cousin by marriage who was MIA in the Bulge, that's all I know of.
The real meaning of Memorial Day has been summed up by Charles Johnson Post, author ofThe Little War of Private Post, his recollections of his service in the 71st New York in the Cuban Campaign of 1898. The Spanish-American War is seen as a minor affair compared to the Civil War and the blood lettings of the 20th Century, but as Post reminds us, even small wars come with a high price:
"Whether a man falls with 20,000 others in some grand battle or all by himself on a lonely outpost, he is a 100% casualty to himself. What more is there to give?"

I was delayed and so was late for the entire ceremony but reached the town square as the bugler began playing TAPS. Grandson and I stopped in the middle of the street and removed our caps as the bugle played. Several of the younger men saw this and also removed their head covers. As we moved on, I thanked each of the other men for their consideration.
Quite different than the scene a couple of years back when one snotty young whelp chose a different path and nearly got his butt whupped for not removing his cap during the National Anthem.

Thank Joe for further diluting and denigrating the holiday which should be sacred for all Americans. He asked that those that died due to Covid19 be honored on Memorial Day. Clearly this is a deliberate slap in the face to all veterans, a group despised and ridiculed by Biden and his Democrat Party.

With all the men in my family that have served,, we have been blessed with having lost only one, My Uncle Freddy, killed on D-Day in Normandy. Other than that, minor injuries only. Truly blessed.

But as this holiday rolls around,, I personally take the time to reflect upon all of our service, & try & imagine what Freddy would have been like, had he not been killed.

But I also think about ALL of our military service members who died during conflict & service.

NEVER forget their sacrifice.

Two names on The Wall that are very special to me.... Dale Lenio and David Freestone. They, as well as countless thousands of others, deserve to be remembered and honored on this day.

Since Memorial Day -- Decoration Day as it was once known -- is about & for those who made the Supreme Sacrifice, lest I forget those I served with in Echo-2-12:

PFC David L Felt , USMC, DOB 04/05/46, Sacramento, CA KIA 08/17/65
Lt. Peter Paul Domiano, USMC, DOB 10/18/43, Industry, NY KIA 07/01/66
PFC Billy Dean Nelson, USMC, DOB 06/30/47, Lommis, NE KIA 07/20/66
PCF Bradley Alan Pearson, USMC, DOB 11/27/46,Clear Lake, WI KIA 07/20/66

And most of all:
PFC John Alton Girod JR, USMC, DOB 06/14/44, Denham Springs, LA KIA 02/21/66

The German song "Ich hatte einen Kameraden" --"I had a comrade" is played on German Remembrance Day . Part of it goes:

A bullet flew towards us
meant for me or meant for you?
It took him away,
he lies beneath my feet
like a piece of myself.

In the case of Johnny, if it wasn’t for him, it would have hit me....

Many of us have family, friends, or neighbors that have given their lives so we can live in freedom. Today I'm grateful to my Uncle Paul who was KIA in WWI and my Cousin Eddy who is MIA in the Korean War. God bless them all and may all the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice rest in peace.

It was a particularly somber Memorial Day weekend for me. My lifelong hero is my uncle, Jim Hulings, who was KIA on Jan. 20, 1945, flying his 28th mission with the Mighty Eighth.
This past Friday, we buried my cousin, Jim Kirkbride, the last family member with a living memory of Uncle Jim.
