FWIW, the Maxi's usually have "slower twist" barrels and may not offer the best results from the lighter/slower bullets of the other cartridges.

Are you sure about that Flatgate?

As a rule the heavier bullets in a given caliber take a faster twist than the lighter ones and I would think that a 357 Maximum would have a twist rate to accommodate heavier bullets. 8)

Im no expert but I did a little research and found .357 barrels from 1:12 to 1:18 twist rate. The average and normal for a .357 mag. would be 1:16. The .357 Max. had a twist of 1:14. Many rifle barrels like for the 35 Remington have a 1:16 twist and can stabilize bullets over 220gr.

Jimbo, I think you will find that the 35 Remington rifle can get by with a 1:16 twist because the velocity is so much higher.

Higher velocity can improve stability to a degree, but the effect is somewhat limited.

In the case of the 357 Max, shooters are expeced to use 200 grain bullets and sometimes even heavier and the velocity, while considerably higher than the .357, would, I think, be insufficient to stabalize properly, bullets in that weight range with a slower twist than the typical .357 Mg.

Most .357 Magnums are 1;18 or thereabouts unless that were built with heavy bullets in mind (custom handguns).

In any event, I don't think the difference is all that great.... 8)
 
The higher velocity of the Maximum allows a slower twist to be used, even with heavy bullets. This also translates to lower pressures. Read some Linebaugh.
