I bought some Federal Match Primers.
What's a "match primer?"
Are they "better" than standard?

I was interested in Federal primers from some posts on another thread re: light strikes using lighter hammer springs.

FWIW, I've read that Federal 205 & 205M (match?) primers are safe to use in 5.56/.223 semiauto rifles like AR15s; the same source recommends CCI & Winchester (but not Federal) for 7.62 semiautos. Also, Lee Precision recommends NOT using Federal primers with some of their reloading tools (check with them if uncertain). Finally, I've used Federal pistol primers with some handguns that have fairly light triggers, with no failures (YMMV). Hopefully someone else will offer some more useful info!

Match primers are more consistent. They are for bench rest competition. CCI calls these primers bench rest primers and add BR to the part number such as BR4.

Although they are better you can't just buy match primers and expect to get more bulls eyes. You'll see no improvement with Match Primers unless you are extremely consistent with everything else. Your powder charge has to be very consistent, bullet weight, etc., etc. You'll need a bench rest while shooting.

I avoid bench rest and match primers because, for me they are a waste of money.

A local gun store is getting out of reloading supplies, bought some powder and projectiles too, but he only had large pistol match primers.

If the pricing of them is the same or very close to non-match primers,, I'll buy them every time. And I do use them exclusively in certain handloads where I have worked hard at having the most consistent ammo for very serious ammo. (Hunting or competition.) Not so much as trying to tighten my groups, or accuracy,, but to get consistency.

I'm now loading for my SRH with a #10 hammer spring, and I saw FEDERAL, so I bought a couple

From other sources I have read that they are basically the same as the regular primers, come off the same line, only are of the highest qc. I have nothing to prove this other than here say. I do buy them when the price is right. I have only experienced one component shortage. I am ready for the next one. Get it why you can.
