Hello all,

I am new to the forum and Ruger, I have purchased my 1st gun (SR9) and still waiting for it unfortunatly...I am wanting to get a Mark III next primarily for my son to shoot at the range (he is 12 yrs old). What model would be best for him, the standard or target and what barrel? He is very familar with guns and has several pellet guns but this would be his first time shooting a "real" gun. I just want him to gain confidence in shooting and enjoy it also. Thanks for your input!

I would let him choose the one he likes.... Just make sure whatever you get has an adjustable rear sight. Non adjustable sights dont build much confidence....

My fav mark III is the 22/45 RP... it just feels right in my hands.....

personaly, I would get a bull barrel model (target)

I would get one of the top two models on this page or a 22/45RP as suggested. He will never out grow them and there is a ton of accessories he can buy for them. Good luck. :D

Oooops! Are they discontinuing the MKIII678??????? I just noticed at the link above that the "Order" button is not there. I asked Santa to get me one for Christmas. I mean, I have been good all year and everything.

Take your son to a gun store that has a good selection of Ruger rimfires and let him handle everything, MK III, 22-45, bull barrel, tapered, ect. If they have a range and will rent several models, let him shoot. Then let him choose. Chances are it will be a pistol he will pass on to your grandson.

The MKIII-512 51/2"barrel is on sale at the Florida Gun Exchange for $249 right now.. That's the same one I will be shooting steel with tomorrow morning. It's not the interchangeable grips.

Gun your pistol through a dealer and it will be cheaper in most cases. :)

I really like the KMKIII512

+1

I have this in a Mark II and I love it. It is my favorite pistol to shoot.

Really?
I have the P512MKIII and it is great at a new-gun cost of $252.

Maybe I am just not sophisticated enough to appreciate the minor differences?

Dave

the cost difference is because of the frame, polymer vs. stainless steel and the material, blued steel vs. stainless. I think that the polymer frames of the 22/45 are much cheaper to produce. I have no experience with them so I'm unable to comment on quality, but I would tend to believe that the polymer frame is just fine as long as you like the angle of it. I don't believe that the 22/45 was available when I purchased my Mark II sixteen years ago.

In fact, I would be tempted to buy a 22/44 with the same barrel that I currently have. Then, I would replace the barrel on my current Mark II when/if it wears out and get a pac-lite barrel for the 22/45. That would be SWEET!

Welcome to the Forum!
+1 to what carsinc said. Let HIM help you pick it out. However,, the suggestion of an adjustable sighted one is a good idea. As long as the weight doesn't bother him,, get a model with adjustables.
