magic number three....357

I came home yesterday with this little piece of goodness. I only recently entered the world of handguns. (I’m 40 years old….how did it take so long!) Over the past three months I owned and tried a Smith and Wesson (Model 29), a Dan Wesson, a Taurus, A Beretta, a Walther, and finally SA Rugers, where things clicked for me. I wish I had friends whose guns I could have borrowed, but I had to do it the hard (and expensive) way of trying out gun after gun on my own. So after playing “musical handguns” I’ve ended up with three that each give me the coveted “thrill.” They’re all single actions and all New Model Blackhawks (I tried a .44 Mag SBH, but the grip didn’t fit my hand). They are this .357, a .44 Special Flattop, and a .45 Colt Convertible. I love Rugers and I love single actions, and it feels good to be “home” finally.

Welcome and congratulations - you are making up for lost time. I was even later than you in my getting into single action Rugers. I have had handguns since I was a kid in the 50s. Had a few Colt SAA, NF, and Scout single actions off and on, but they never stuck. Then in 2001, at the fresh age of 64, I bumped into another old fart trying without success to get a really attractive price for a like new w/boxes and papers, Bearcat at a gun show. It quickly morphed into a 50th .44 magnum, a FT SS .44 Special, and a SS .22 Single-Six Convertible. I still like J-frame Smiths for carry, but these single action Rugers are my fun and farm and ranch trip guns. Enjoy, jack

I've only found one problem with ruger single actions. They always seem to multiply. I started out with one and in a few years I now own 17 and want more. They are lonesome little boogers and want more company all the time. At least you have the right barrel length to start with. I have mostly 4 5/8" rugers with a few of the others in there for good measure.

This is the shortest one I have. The other two are 5 1/2. I like both lengths, but the shorter is nice for convenience.

The plough handle does feel great. It's when the loads get hot that it feels good in the hand.

Whatever you do, do NOT get your hands on an Old Model SA Ruger. It has been known to cause severe cases of Rugeritis. You'll really wonder why it took so long,,,!

Too late for the Rugeritis....Don't know when I'll ever get a chance to handle an OM, but it sounds like I'd better stay away from them for awhile.

Went out for some extensive shooting with my three Rugers. Fair accuracy with the .45 Colt. Excellent with the .44 Special (I LOVE that gun!). Good accuracy with the .357. It was hitting quite low, but centered and the group was good. I feel confident in both the .357 and the .44. I just need to keep working on the .45. I'm in denial that the cylinders need reaming. I can't afford to get that done for awhile. I tried shoving my .452 bullets through them, but they wouldn't come close to going through.

Congrats!!! im new here also and just purchased my first ruger 357 blackhawk 6.5 barrel....im hooked, my wife wont like it but you know the saying...you can have my wife but never my gun..ha..im looking to get a nice pearl grip for it. any suggestions?

Turning out to be a fine shooting gun. My wife shot it the other night and liked it! I'm running out of ammo for it, but have tons of brass. Might be time to tackle casting....I was looking at the mould yesterday.

The 6.5 barrel is much better for ballistics from what I hear. See if you can get your wife to shoot it. She may like it! Do a google search on grips. There are lots of options out there. I'm sticking to the cheese graters for now. But eventually I'll tackle making my own out of wood.
