I'm trying to figure what my rifle is. It says M77 markII. Wich makes it the target model. But it does not match up with the current catalog. Mine has a brown laminated stock and it is glossy stainless not mat. I assume it is a discontinued model or was it a special distributor rifle? It is chambered in 223 and does not have iron sights. Is this a rare rifle? I paid $100 for it from somebody I did a lot of flavors for. So I know I got a good deal on it but I'd like to know more about it. Thanks Ed.

They used to have the brown laminate and gloss stainless, now they are target grey stainless and black laminate.

Ruger also made/makes a sporter model that is very similar but has a more tapered barrel and standard trigger.

The name M77 Mark II does not make it the target model. They did make target models in the M77 Mark II most of which where brown laminate stocks and heavy target grey barrels but some of them had black laminate stocks with flat black heavy barrels but those are 223 and 308 only. I think from your discription that it just a plain stainless Mark II rifle which at $100 is a great deal. If you can some post some pics of your rifle I am sure that can be more information given.

I forgot they did make some of the first models I think that had the non-target grey barrels. I am not the rifle expert for sure so please forgive my lack of knowledge I mostly go on what I have or I have seen and I do recall seeing one like you are talking about in a 243 configuration.

Pretty sure the early target models were blued recievers and stainless barrels then the change to all target grey. The matte models in 223 and 308 were the VLE models and came with bipods iirc.

Pictures would help a lot...

hope this works, sorry about the poor picture quality. It has a tapered barrel so it is not the target version. Thanks again, Ed.

Looks like the early MKII Sporter model to me, still a great gun. If the barrel is 22" then its a sporter, the Target model has a 26" barrel.

It has the 3 position safety & 22in barrel. It is stamped both M77 & MARK II. Also has a Nikon buckmasters scope. Chambered in 223. Thanks again.

I just got off the phone with Ruger they said it is a standard mark II made in Sept. 2000 stainless with laminate stock and 223. Other than the date everything else was pretty obvious. At least I know it has not been altered. Wish they gave out production numbers. It sounds like a pretty common rifle. Thanks again.

Well it's definitely not the earlier 77V with the nicer "Target Grey" finish. What's it got for a trigger?

What am I looking for on the trigger?

The 77 V has a two stage adjustable - you'll feel about 1/4" of free travel, stop then the trigger pull.

Thanks dfletcher. Mine has the single stage trigger.

It appears that they don't really offer a model like this anymore. It is like the predator without the 2 stage trigger. Or maybe the all weather hawkeye with a laminate stock. Or the compact hawkeye with the laminate stock but with the longer barrel. It is very close to a sporter but the sporter doesn't even come in 223 anymore.(if it ever did). On top of that the glossy stainless and the brown stock aren't available le at all. I guess it doesn't matter it is what it is. I like it and I know it was worth the $100. Thanks again to everybody for the help.

This is my first 223 rifle from what I have read the m77 has a 1:9 twist and I should stay below 73gr bullet weight. Does this sound right? Is military ammo safe to shoot? One article said bolt action 223 should not use the military loads but it said they have a 1:12 twist.

I guess what I need to know is how careful do I need to be when I buy ammo? Are cartridges suitable for an ar-15 suitable for my M77. Thanks Ed

A bolt gun is tougher than any AR 15, you don't want to use any ammunition longer than standard, 2.25". All commercially available .223 and 5.56 NATO is safe in your gun. 1-9 twist will handle up to 77 grain bullets.

This is one I picked up a couple years ago, .30-06.

It is now one of three that wear a semi-skeletonized "boat paddle" stock, although the laminate stock is next to the safe should I want to change it back. Light weight won out...

Thanks for the reassurance. Ed

Those are nice looking rifles Coyotehunter. I can see were you'd want the lighter stock in the field. Ed

The M77 MkII has had so many variations, specials ect...I love them all. My father in law has this same rifle in 22.250 it is gorgeous.

I found one like yours with the boat paddle stock today at a gun shop. WOW! What a difference! I can see why you went with the boat paddle over the laminate. Must weigh half as much. Ed.

How could anyone think that the Target Grey finish looks better than good old polished stainless ? 8)

Eveled, your rifle is model KM77RBZ MKII, made as a special distributor model for Wal-Mart.

Thanks 3d! I'll make an entry in my notebook. Any idea how many were made? Thanks again. Ed.

Just found a brown (natural wood) laminate M77 MK11 in grey finish, heavy barrel, 26" in 204 Ruger. New, never fired in the box. Beautiful gun.
The price is $700.00 firm. Is this a reasonable price? Does the gray finish have a name and what type of finish is it?
Thanks

The dull grey color is brushed stainless. Go to rugers web site do a caliber search for 204. Yours sounds most like the target version that now has a black/grey laminate stock. The list is $999. I should think you could get it new for $850 to $900 range. Ed

got the rifle today for $700.00. Its not a brushed stainless finish but some type of gray coating that is very nice . Beautiful gun.
