I was boresighting my M77 Mk II and went to pull bolt out and it would not go fully in the up position. After a little work, was able to get handle to go up and I pulled bolt out. I have no idea how these things work, but it sure doesn't look right. What broke??

Ron,

Here's a possibility to check. In your second pic, there is a stainless pin sticking out of the rear of the bolt (just above the safety notch), if that was sheared off within the bolt it would cause the type of problem you described. Here's how to check it out:
1. Remove the firing pin assembly from the bolt. Just put a pin, or nail, in the small hole shown in your pic 2, just above the end of the stainless pin. Then unscrew the firing pin assembly.
2. With the firing pin assembly removed, manually push the stainless pin into the bolt shroud (like you are putting the safety selector to the safe position. Check that the forward part of the stainless pin protrudes out the front of the bolt shroud, and that it isn't broken or bent.

I've never had to replace one of the stainless pins (bolt lock pin) so you will need to contact Ruger for parts and procedure.

Ted, I answered you the other day, but must have not hit the submit button. I pulled the bolt apart, the wrong way, but got it accomplished. It appears that one of the roll pins may have broken, as the rear of the firing pin in the cocking piece moves to the side rather than coming straight back. Not much but noticeable. Ruger called and they wanted entire rifle in case bolt had to be replaced to ensure proper headspace. Nice Lady sent me FedEx data and rifle shipped today. I know all here know that Ruger does not make the M77 Mk II anymore, I didn't, but still have parts so they will accept and repair. Rifle is 23 years old. They will not accept original M77.
Another thing I learned is Ruger does not publish serial number/date of manufacture data on their site anymore. In that regard can anyone put a date on an original M77 serial number 74-957xx?

Looks like 1980.

Did they TELL you they don't publish that data any longer, because that's clearly incorrect.

No, they didn't tell me about the data, I just couldn't find it where I used to look. Thanks for the info.

They still have the serial number date data. On old site and new site. Here is a link: http://beta.ruger.com/service/productHistory/RI-M77MarkIIDE.html

Shipped rifle off to Ruger via FedEx last Friday. Tracking indicated it arrived yesterday, Thursday. Still no word from Ruger to that affect. I have never sent anything to Ruger before. Is no response on their receiving a gun, the norm? Don't know, just asking.

I just had a rifle into them for repair. They received it, did whatever they did to it in less than a week, and it is en route back to me. Not a word. No idea what, if anything they did.

I am confident that they addressed the issue for which I returned it and it will be fine when it shows up.

Update on rifle. Ruger called me yesterday. Replaced the bolt and the stock. Evidently the stock allowed a trigger pin to much room to "possibly" move and cause a malfunction. Can't remember all about the bolt other than a pin was broken. Should have it back in a week.

Wow! Now THAT'S service! My rifle came back with the issue addressed (barrel was not "clocked" to the receiver). Now I just have to find time to shoot it.
