Long 480 Ruger bullets

The bullet is pretty long north of the crimp groove, and I'm wondering if it will safely chamber in a Super Redhawk cylinder. Does anyone have any experience with this mold in particular, or with long nosed bullets in the 480 Ruger?

looks like it will stick out of the case at least 3/4" so you do the math...

Not sure where you got 3/4"; I got .47"+- from that drawing. Max COL from the internet is 1.765" and I'm too lazy tonight to get out a gun and calipers to check. Case length should be 1.285" so you're right at the edge where the end of your bullet might end up in the cylinder gap. I don't have a .480 so I can't tell how much of an issue that might be.

I guess you could crimp it past the band ok...but the case capacity is severely limited...not a problem if that's what you want. That is a lot of lead for a revolver cylinder...maybe somebody will chime in that has tried this...good luck

The loaded length of that bullet, in a .480 case is 1.91"
Case length= 1.285"
Bullet from crimp groove to nose=.625"
Removing .07 for the rim=1.84" that needs to fit inside the cylinder.

I'm not sure crimping in front of the top driving band would allow enough of a crimp to prevent bullet jump. If using a hard alloy, you also run the risk of bulging the case.

Well, I see 3 grooves for lube, no cannelure, not much of a shoulder to crimp over and if you choose to crimp over the ogive, little case capacity left. Soo..I'd contact the maker and ask them what the intended application is for this bullet. YMMV.

These bullets may be more suited for the .475 Linebaugh with its greater case capacity. Not that you couldn't load them long in .480 Ruger, but the intended design seems to be about .5" of bullet out of the case.

I designed and shoot the 48-420v to be shot out of my Redhawk. Unless I red the numbers wrong the crimp to nose measurement is the same as mine. It will load and shoot just fine crimped in the crimp groove

48-420V was another design I had my eye on. If you didn't mind, what kind of alloy are you using, and at what weight do the bullets drop from the mold on average?

I use range lead most of the time. They usually fall out at 425 penetrate like crazy and have given 4-6 inch groups open sights at 100yds

I have loaded .357 Mg. in the Redhawk to an OAL of 1.705".
This was with the Hornady 180 gr. bullet with 2 crimping grooves, crimped in the lower groove.

There was still about 1/16" space ahead of the bullet nose to the end of the cylinder. 8)

I load my .480 Rugers to 1.650" OAL. A 410 gr from Cast Performance is .93", a 340 gr from Missouri Bullet Company is .816". Doesn't answer your questions about that specific model, just general .480 info. All my manuals call for less than 1.7" OAL for any .475- .476 bullet in .480. actually the longest OAL I see is 1.700".
