I remember some years back with the gas prices went up the thieving of gas from parked vehicles started happening.

Now with gas on the way to 5 bucks a gallon it is sure to start again!

Alternatively use a bug zapper an isolate a wire to the filler door and have it turned on so when anyone attempts to open it they get ZAPPED! Might as well rig a siren alarm to it, too, so the zap and loud alarm will likely send them scurrying.

I was thinking along similar lines. Not sure it is worth it yet in my case as we're on a short out of the way road (we've never gotten more than a few trick or treaters at Halloween).

Thinking about a way to park my one outside vehicle so something solid (like a wall) blocks the filler door. Not sure I can do it completely in my driveway, though I could make it a little more difficult to get at. I could chain my trash cans together next to a 3 foot retaining wall and stick them next to the filler. Maybe put some tin cans on the chain so they'd at least have to make some noise and a little effort when they climb over the cans or try to move them to get at the filler.

A bug zapper around the gas filler sounds like a good way to start an accidental fire. Besides don’t most cars lock the little filler flap when the car is locked? All our cars do.

But I was wondering if people are driving less? I filled up the other day, and the normally busy gas station was really quiet.

Most cars have a blocking strap just inside the tank so you can not get a hose into the tank more than a inch or two the last time the thieves went so far as to drive a punch thru the bottom of tanks to get the gas

Gramps

Last time things got bad they simply poked holes in the bottom of the tanks. Hit mostly vehicles that sat higher.

But the thieves have nothing to fear here. Per of DA it isn’t a prosecutable offense.

Yep, as stated it's almost impossible to siphon gas out of a gas tank through the cap these days. All the new tanks are plastic so it's super easy to drill them with a cordless drill and just have a can with a funnel ready.

went to fill up my work van yesterday the damn pump cut off at $100 and about 23 gallons.... I was running late for a job and so did not get it filled up.
Bug zapper near the cap sure sounds like a accident waiting to happen.. good friend a few years back used to use a bic lighter to hold the pump nozzle on at the stations that take the latch off of it... if flipped one time and sparked and guess what happened.... nice big flame from the gas vapors....

This thread made me take a good lock at my cars. Two have doors that cover the fuel input area, one with a screw on cap and one with no cap. My newest car has a metal flap over the unlocked gas cap, and this flap is tied to the door locks. When the car is locked, you can't flip open the latch to get to the gas cap. Good system in my mind. Its a Mini Cooper S.

Out in the sticks, we don't need to worry about such things. Most folks leave their keys in the ignition.
I've seen people leaving their cars running in the parking lot of the local Hyvee, and go shopping. For a half hour or more.
It's a far cry from Portland, where we used to lock the car if we were going into the 7 eleven for a snack.

I walked my dog past a lanscaping truck which was left running while the guys were working. I have no idea why they left it running. Seems like a waste to me. It got me to thinking how many people will be doing that now-a-days with gas prices like they are.

I never leave the engine running unless someone is in the vehicle and needs the a/c or heat on. Even if I run into a convenience store for a few seconds the car is normally locked and the keys with me. I grew up in the more peaceful 1950's in Brooklyn, NY and even then we always turned off the engine and locked up even for the briefest time away from the car.

With regard to "locking gas caps", I witnessed a service station attendant pop off mine and comment that they were not a problem to 'open' sans key. If you put one on your vehicle, there are several ways to defeat them and the end result could cost more than a tank of gas! A slightly better option would be a locking gas fill door if your vehicle lacks one.

The new capless filler necks are nearly impossible to siphon. It can be done, but let me put it this way. Having to siphon one out of dire need it took me about two hours. That is knowing the internals of the filler neck and in tank components. Even then I’d get a gallon or two and then have to adjust the hose again. There is just no way to do it quick. Your thief will give up or fall back to the ice pock method.

Most of the filler doors I have seen just have a plastic lock tab. Wouldn't be too hard to defeat that.

Also.I had a service station in the 70's and many people would come in for gas and could not find the cap key.
A good screw driver and a pair of channel locks would open them up with the only damage being the gas cap.

They were probably just workers burning company gasto keep it cool for them

Someone stole 5 gallons of gas from my truck´s tank. I put in a locking gas cap and next day my "service engine soon" light went on. The mechanic told me those caps let air in which triggers the light. He also told me I was lucky that the thief didn't run into it. When they find one, they just poke a hole in the tank to steal the gas. Costs a fortune to replace the gas tank.

Had the same issue with my Tacoma. Realized there was no sense in a locking cap. They just punch a hole in tanks these days because it’s easier than trying to syphon.

Saw a news story last night that thieves have some tech that is allowing them to steal at the pump--even if station is closed. Apparently already bad enough it could put stations out of business.

Biden+ANTIFA=Transition?

Pretty sad but not surprising these days. People just kinda suck. Guess morals and honesty have gone out the window.

After the tank has been punched, just put a valve in the hole for next time. Never leave more than a gallon or so in it and drain that yourself before you walk away.

Or just stay out of 3rd world shite holes and keep your business in decent neighborhoods.

Heck they'll do it in your front yard here. Along with your cat converter.

Gotta drop the tank to put in a valve. That's not so easy on most vehicles. Crooks won't look for it anyway and they won't know your tank is empty. So, buy a bunch of valves if you're in a problematic area.
