They aren't in business around here anymore but when I was a kid they had a coffee grinder at every cash register in the A&P. It smelled so good when someone got them to grind a bag of the 8 o'clock coffee. I'm not even sure if anyone around here even sells it anymore.

YES, JFG is made in Knoxville TN. I worked there for a while and it is good coffee. I did not mention it cause I thought it was local only. 8 o'clock coffee is fine also.
Community coffee and Donut Shop coffees are flat nasty to me. I also use a powered Hazzle nut creamer.

I've used a ton over the years of various fancy self-grinders/french press/cheapie espresso makers/grandmas old boiler/ etc.
Have settled for now on one of the Mr. Coffee offerings.
Use the cup-cone-filter-drip when camping.
Found a place in Eugene that uses very course ground espresso and pours silver $ size molds full of dark chocolate liqueur on top. It solidifies and makes a handy 'coffee pemmican' that will give you a caffeine buzz if you can stand chewing through the chocolate. It's valued highly by some of the wimmin I know.

Well, I used to love the French Press. Grind the whole beans, heat the water, let it sit, alter the time and amount of beans depending on my taste for the coffee at the time. It was the whole process that I loved.... then top it off with a great cup of joe.
Then, I started getting runs of PAC's (heart arrhythmia ) - caused by stress, stimulants, etc. I quite caffeine cold turkey and they went away in short order. Went about 2 years without caffeine. Now I drink tea on occasion, and indulge in coffee about twice a week; but often drink decaffeinated.
Though, sometimes I look at that lonely grinder and French Press sitting in the cabinet and think about sneaking a strong cup of black goodness once again.

You guys PAY for coffee? Get one of the old McDonald's coffee mugs off ebay, then it's FREE*. Plus, if you are REALLY cheap, like me, you cancel your internet provider and do all your surfing with their free wifi. I figure all of this leaves me about an extra $100 a month for my ammo fund.
*Avoid McDonalds located on interstate hiways. They usually charge at least a refill fee. The manager at one of them told me if he filled McDonald mugs free, his only customers would be travelers looking for a refill and a bathroom.

The best coffee I have had is from a chorreador, a coffee making device used in Costa Rica in which hot water leaches through coffee grounds held in a cloth filter mounted on a wooden stand, then drips into a container.
A friend's girl friend is from Costa Rica, I made her a stand tall enough to put a coffee pot under the filter. Cafe Britt and a chorreador are waiting for me when I get out of this nursing home next month. The wife does bring a thermos to me every so often.

I've used a Keurig for quite a few years. I'm pretty satisfied with it. The ability to brew just one cup or a small pot, and of the variety I want at any given time fits my life well.
That said, the wife recently wanted a Nespresso machine. I have to admit the coffee is quite good, and it's pretty programmable so that you can have the coffee made the way you want. But, the pods are expensive even when compared to the Keurig.
But, my favorite way to brew coffee, when I have the time, is with a perculator. There is an art to it unlike the other methods. Getting the brew strength right and not burning the coffee takes time to learn. Sadly too many people today don't want to learn anything, much less how to brew a truly excellent cup of coffee.

Chock Full 'o Nuts, Named after the New York nut shop William Black started in 1926 and made his first coffee shop in 1932. Good coffee but has no nuts in it. I still prefer our locally produced Community Coffee.

I like it strong and dark but I also add sweetened creamer to it and am utterly unapologetic about it. 
I have several I go back and forth with. Folgers Black Silk is my staple but also Gevalia Dark Royal and Majestic, Dunkin' Dark, Westrock, Starbucks Sumatra, etc.. Also a cappuccino once in a while. I have a Bunn in the kitchen and a Keurig in my shop.

I buy Folger's Classic Roast, have for many, many years. I brew it slightly stronger than normal.
I love a cup of good hot coffee. But flavored coffees and iced coffees just taste awful to me. I've wasted a good bit of money in the mall because something smelled so good, like Dutch Chocolate Mocha, or Hazel nuts coffee, but then when I bought it, it tasted just terrible.

When I was a little kid my Dad told of how they used to roast peanuts real dark and ground them up and blended with coffee grounds to make the coffee go farther.
So, I shelled a bunch of peanuts and roasted them in my Mother's oven till dark brown. I broke them up and crushed them to a fair semblance of coffee grounds and blended the mixture with coffee grounds. Made a pot of coffee from that.
It was just awful.

Not a coffee drinker except when we go out for breakfast. Wife must have a pot every morning. She makes some kind of decaf and I wonder "what's the point)? Each to his own, I guess. I do like a cup of hot tea in the winter time......yes we actually have a Deep South winter. It even gets down to freezing a couple times a year :lol: But back to the subject. My parents were Eight O'Clock drinkers as when I was born they both worked for A&P. I'll buy a pound of A&P from time to time, mainly to smell it percolating just for old-time-sake.

America is one of the largest coffee drinking nations in the world, if no the largest, yet we drink the worst coffee. Most people settle for Folger's, Maxwell House, Eight O'clock and various other run of the mill brands when there are so many other better coffee's out there. With a coffee shop of some sort on nearly every street corner in America it's easy to try different types from all over the world.

The coffee snobs will never have to stand in line behind me. I've had coffee in Paris. I had cappuccino every morning for two weeks at a luxury hotel in Florence, Italy. Brought home two pounds of Kona coffee from Hawaii at $50/lb. I had French press coffee at a $150 a plate restaurant Tuesday night. It was all wonderful. However, the best single cup I've had in my entire life was a cup of plain ole Folgers after going two weeks without any coffee at all. I don't remember the trip or why I went without but I will NEVER forget that cup of coffee.whichwatch said:

We have changed up since the last go round with this thread. I was given a percolator for Fathers Day. We are still using Columbian coffee though my wife has been buying the really big can of Members Mark brand Sam's Club sells.

My understanding is that 8 O'Clock is still made in the same factory but under a different owner. We've purchased it a a regional grocery chain called Winn-Dixie and also at WalMart. As a teen in high school I worked at A&P and loved to work in the coffee/dairy section. Loved grinding that coffee!Mike J said:

I didn't know Winn Dixie was still in business. The ones in town here went out of business some time back.

There's still an Arbuckle's brand, although not the original company, at $16.95 per pound. Anybody tried it?
The original company was evidently the first to roast and package the beans and used some sort of glaze to preserve the coffee flavor. Saved the chuckwagon cook the trouble of roasting the beans.

blume357, I really don't see a way to connect those dots. Not only do I have zero effects from caffiene but I doubt you'll find an instance where someone completely ruined their life because they drank coffee. Or broke into someone's home to steal their belongings to feed their coffee habit.

I never have developed a taste for coffee. Can't stand the stuff, frankly. My aversion to coffee has in fact made my parents wonder where they went wrong raising me, and led assorted sergeants I served under in the Army to question my manhood. Although they didn't question it too loudly, given how awful Army coffee tends to be.
So I get my caffeine transfusions through iced tea, and during cold winter months the occasional cup of steaming hot Earl Grey tea with sugar. In fact, there's a nice tall glass of sweet tea on the table next to me as I type this.
