LARGE CAVE / CAVERN

With my new found mobility I've been doing a lot of canyon cruising in some pretty remote country. This is a photo of what used to be a very large spring as attested by the wear on the surrounding rocks and the appearance of the canyon below. Inside this opening is a tunnel to a large cave or cavern and Lord only knows how many rattlers! This is the real deal and there are plenty of live springs and lots of water in the surrounding canyons ! Dr.C

Bob ,it's my legs and balance, had a stroke a few years ago as the result of a cow accident but getting much better now. Thanks ,Gary

Believe me, I do realize the danger of going in there, but what if there is an old strong box full of Wells Fargo gold hidden in there.

Do you have any plans on exploring in there?

A least a rusty Navy Colt with one load left in the cylinder! Or an old "green" .50-70 case! I never could resist poking my nose into a place like that....even now that I'm near 70!

No one has been in there. idk how long it has been dry, I suspect a very long time . The pictures of Canvasback ducks on a spring fed waterhole is a spring 40' below this opening. The old wild western town of Old Tascosa was not very far away [maybe 35=40 miles] There are possibilities that someone could have holed up in the area. One could easily live inside. I will post fotos of a VERY LARGE mountain lion killed in the general area by a rancher estimated to be 14 years old that weighs 175 #. Dr.C

I gotta think that there is some 10,000yr old and probably older native relics around it somewhere

And I am going to guess, the musky scent of rattlesnake is around there

I firmly believe there is artifact around it or in it--use to do a little digging--they will put you in prison for life in Alabama if caught digging now :!:

Rattlers or not, I'd be checking out that cave! You never know what you might find or see in there!

I'm with contender! No ay I could NOT have so much curiosity to stay out of that. Smoke bombs or something to flush out whatever might be inside but I'd get inside somehow.

Cary C that picture was taken in Palo Duro Canyon 40 miles to the east. I am going in there next winter when its darn cold. Dr.C :?

Pile up some brush in front of it Doc. You wouldn't want someone else finding that Wells Fargo strong box before you get to it.

By the way, you wouldn't happen to have the GPS coordinates handy would you? I lost a dog and I think I can just barely see him in the picture peeking out of that cave. :mrgreen:

All my caving experience is mostly in Missouri and Arkansas so I'm not sure how caves work in Texas. I've never seen a snake in a cave and have always been told that caves are too cold and snakes won't go in them. Your mileage my vary. There is a difference between a cave and the holes and crevices where snakes sometimes congregate to winter.

However, the rocks around the entrance to caves are an entirely different matter. You should always approach the entrance to a wild cave very carefully.
