Still not working but finally sold my UTV to a nice lady that really seemed stooked to have it. My kids are getting bigger so it sat a lot anyway. Life could be a lot harder but without a steady pay check it sure seems bad. I have so many blessing though. My family is in good health. Couple great kids that I am so proud of. Worry about their future at times but very proud. My daughter graduated in the top 10% of her class and has enough scholarships lined up to cover a lot of her college. She'll live at home and commute. She also finished her CNA already through high school and starts a new job later this month.
I have to figure out the most efficient way to cook 25 pounds of taco meat for her modest grad party. I guess a few pounds at a time in my big chili pot will have to do. Thursday is grocery shopping. Friday is cooking and Saturday is setup and party.

Life is full of ups and downs. If it weren't for the downs,, we wouldn't appreciate the ups as much.

Life goes up and life goes down but it keeps on going. You will get through this and it will make you stronger.

It sounds like your daughter is going to school for the medical field. Check into Health Resources and Services Administration scholarships. If she qualifies they will cover her education and pay her a stipend while in school. She will have to work for a period of time in an area where there is a shortage of healthcare people.

My wife took advantage of this program to get her BSN degree and worked on an Indian Reservation to pay back her schooling. She had no college debt and gained valuable experience by doing this.

I also want your daughter's name and address for a graduation card.

Seems like these days it makes little difference what field or subject a 'college degree' is related to or how well the student performed in college. Of my 3 kids, only my older Son is working in the field represented by his BS/MS. Daughter has bounced around from medical lab to law enforcement to clerical to her current job as a technical writer for a global engineering business. Younger Son has a degree in 'recreational design' (handicap compatible playgrounds-who could be better suited to this than a blind person?) but he's making his living based on what I taught him at home.

A career in music? How 'bout music teacher? My daughter took violin lessons for years from a guy. He was a lawyer, got fed up with all that being a lawyer involves and opened a music store. He teaches private lessons, and his brother makes some and fixes some violins.

I don't think he'll want to do the teacher thing. Our district hired two freshies out of college for open assistant band director spots a couple years ago and one of them quit before the school year started (band starts in July), moved back home, and went to work at Taco Bell.

A career in music? How 'bout music teacher? My daughter took violin lessons for years from a guy. He was a lawyer, got fed up with all that being a lawyer involves and opened a music store. He teaches private lessons, and his brother makes some and fixes some violins.

I have a cousin who is a musician and music teacher. He works for a private school and also gives lessons on the side. He is a great organist who can make a pipe organ really sing.
We also have a niece who is going for a doctorate in music. I have a feeling that she will be mired in college debt for many years and have to do something besides music to be able to live.

My wife's uncle has a doctorate in music. He is published too. My aunt playing a 2700 pipe organ professionally for 30+ years after a degree in music from TWU. My cousin has no degree but played professionally for years on the side. None of those are careers for most and they don't fit my kid's personality. I think he's gonna be a cop.

you are and have been a successful father. you have shown them and taught them how to find their way. college is overpriced over valued, only to graduate to find your 200,000 indebt and starting a new job at the bottom. i tell every young person if they are able go in the service( under trump) go to a trade school unless they are really focused on a direction. i ve found the things you don't like doing move you toward things that you might like doing

I'm kinda where you are. It seems like everything I touch at work turns to do do. I have done it very successfully for 40 years. The head game is intense sometimes. Glad to see you know the real blessings in life. Hope you get steady work soon. And congrats to the kids.

I am a Christian and have found the book of James very instructive as to going through hard times. My Nephew majored in Voice and opera at NYU ended up getting a job doing programing. My son came out of college with student debt. When he got a good job, I told he could stay at home and with his income he could pay off the debt in about a year. He said no I want to buy a house I can put the debt on deferment. I advised against it having had to collect student debt for a while. Anyway, now he has an extra payment. His choice. Can't say OI didn't try.

That's long been the case. My father was a Business & Public Administration major and was a programmer.

My degree is in math and at my first major job out of college, I was writing software to assist in designing submarines. My fellow programmers included two PhD physicists and an electrical engineer.

One of the best programmers I ever worked with had a masters in child psychology but discovered that he didn't like children.

A good friend is an aeronautical engineer and wound up running a chemical plant.

Another friend is a nuclear engineer and wound up working in IT.
