dont think the px is any better. its a big scandal as to the cost of haircuts.
keep in mind, many men need a cut every 2 weeks. and at 15-20 a pop and 25 with tip....its a lot.
600 bucks a year for 4.0 cut. wow.

I've pretty much always paid to have my both of my daughters get their hair done. The boy got home hair cuts when he was younger. Now that he is entering his teen years we take him to get it cut. Sometimes during football season he will still get his sister to give him a buzz cut.
Before I met my wife, I had a woman that I went to for haircuts. She did a great job. Shortly before we were wed my wife asked me where she could have her hair done. I told her about that woman. She came back to inform me all the woman did the whole time she was there was talk about how much she liked me. I could tell it bothered my wife so I quit going there & started getting her to cut my hair. A few years ago she passed the chore off to my daughter. I get a buzz cut from time to time. I'm 60 & married with three kids. I don't think anyone is too worried about what I look like anymore. I trim my own beard & mustache.

My wife has been cutting my hair for about the last 16 years. Lacking much hair it's a simple buzz with the 1/8" guide. Get it every 2-3 weeks. I do my own beard and mustache.

Our town of about 10,000 had 3 barber shops and in the last four years two of the barbers aged out. Cost of a haircut was the same at all three shops, $15. The remaining shop has been my barber for over 30 years and is still charging $15. The other two shops were bought by Hispanics, and their haircuts seem to start in the $40 range, my, the cost of handsome has gone up! My barber is a year older than me, two years away from 80, and thankfully has no plans to retire until forced to by health. If he goes before I do my conservative thinning mop will have to transition to a home-grown buzz or possibly a "prison shave"! $40 just seems to be way too much to trim up a thinning thatch.

In a pinch my Wife will cut my hair. During the ridiculous and unnecessary covid shut downs I refused to let my hair grow out of regs. We had clippers on hand because my step son refused to have anyone else cut his hair as a child (the umbilical cord is still mentally attached to this day even though he is married). Anyway, she learned to be pretty good but it took her forever and she complained about it non stop.

I have had some pretty rough barracks cuts and deployment cuts, but when she first started I'm surprised I never bled out or lost an ear. I learned to 1. Let the clippers warm up and 2. Have a few bourbons prior. That was my biggest fear during the overexaggerated covid BS.......

It may seem that way,, but the whole beauty industry has gone crazy. From "Barber shops to Salons, to full expectation of a very generous tip, and other such things that are way over priced just to satisfy vanity for many.

I live in a rural area,, and only know of ONE true "Barber shop" where it's a place for men to get a simple cut. Every other place is a Salon. Barbers used to be men. Now a Hairdresser is mostly women, or girly type males.
I personally don't go to any because I've been loyal to my lady friend & SHE is the one who tells me to only pay $5 for my simple cut. It takes her about 2-3 minutes to do what little hair I have that needs a cutting.
But my best half,, gets her hair done every few months & after the tip & all, it's over $250. And that's a less expensive place than she'd been using. She's there for about 1-1/2 hours. She even stated long ago, that she's been going LESS often because of the expense. And at $250 for her hair cut & treatment,, that's over $165 an hour.

An old time barber for men,, can do a lot of customers in a short time, and make as much or more even at $15 for a cut if he's good.
And at $15 for a cut is reasonable in todays economy.

But $40 plus a tip for a simple cut that takes just a couple of minutes is bit much.

And you obviously haven't read or paid attention to the constant complaints here about the costs of ammo, the costs of guns, the cost of reloading components, the complaints of the prices at a gun show etc.

No sympathy here for the over-priced beauty industry.

I wondered if my post was going to be taken in such a way that it would torque someone off. It seems like it did. I'm a senior (79) who lives just south of Atlanta and have to get my hair cut every four weeks due to the thickness and growth. I'm lucky in that respect compared to most men my age and a lot younger. No sign of loss or MPB. There's nothing low cost or cheap around a big city. But I found a young lady that was part of a chain around 15 years ago that has gone off on her own and still does it. $23 per cut for seniors. I feel guilty about how low it is and give her $30 and $45 extra for Christmas. $15 for a cut that you mentioned would put a barber in poverty with today's economy.
Based on the prices you've mentioned it seems to be quite high for your wife in any part of the country. Wow!
I'm also aware of gun and ammunition prices, especially ammo. But it is what it is. To shoot or not shoot, that is the question.

I had an old neighborhood barber who had a plastic model of an F4U Corsair hanging from the ceiling. When I asked about it he told me about how he was an aircraft mechanic who worked on them in the Pacific. He had another part time barber who I think was older than him. His hands shook so bad he could barely pour a cup of coffee, much less handle a straight razor. He scared the crap out of me. Both have since passed and the shop is gone.

I don't need a stylist, a trendy fade up or a shampoo (since I shower before I leave the house). I've been paying $18-20ish for years for a regular haircut and tip $5 hoping to build some recognition/rapport in various shops.

I found two good barbers but they both retired, leaving me with local hacks who give what I call "two haircuts for the price of one" (buzzed on the sides with a slightly longer unblended mop sticking out on top).

One in particular uses clippers only and spends half of a wham-bam ten-minute production-line "session" with hands waving in the air, pontificating with opinions and dropping F-bombs. She's really close, handy and cheap, but her haircuts are embarrassing. And I have no use for the raving - especially engaged with other customers who're sitting and waiting their turns. Really??? I've been tempted to ask her to rein it in and focus on my haircut. Probably should have. What's she gonna do, give me a shjtty one? Doesn't matter, I'm done there.

Finally found a gal 30 minutes away who uses scissors and does a nice job. She charges $25 (even with the senior discount) and I tip $5 ($10 in December). Her haircuts look good growing out for 6, even 7 weeks.

If her prices go up, I'll keep going there and hope she'll stick around.

My Barber is a Marine, and the Son of the original Barber also a Marine, Nam Vet who just passed recently. Been going to that shop for well over 20 yrs. His Son joined him when he discharged from the Corps. When he retired, the Son kept it going. My Son had his first haircut there and still gets his hair cut there when home on leave. The walls are covered in Military pictures, rank patches, and local sports stuff. The "old timers" come in the back....and we are welcome to grab a beer from the fridge on our way to the waiting area. There are also bottles of whiskey if you want a shot....and there may or may not be some stuff in mason jars in the back room (lemon might be my favorite ;)).

It's a great place, especially for Vets and active duty. Some Saturdays it's full of Navy/Marines from Camp David. Also a few Army guys from Fort Detrick are in there. It did move across the street a couple years ago. The Son had the opportunity to buy what was the original shop. When the Father came home from Nam, he opened up a convenience/liquor store. That evolved into a barber business. Now, the business is back where it started and the other shop is now the Mothers hairdressing/nail place.

$20 and a $5 tip.....depending how much beer I drink. Never in a hurry to get in the chair or leave when I go. Just a great place to hang out. I wish I still lived in that town sometimes....but it is in MD and I'm the "Free" guy from PA when gun conversation comes up....which is often.

You just need an ample supply of Bourbon for this, it will get you through any haircut..... I have heard!

Haven't had a haircut in 35 years. Have a ponytail now for all those years...at about my age it is getting a bit thin. I used to be a barber(nasty job)...2 dollar haircuts...2.25 on Saturday. In1967 Sat before Easter...I EARNED 380 bucks...plus tips...a big tip was 50 cents...never sat down hit the head couple times 4 or 5 drinks of whiskey(OFC...an Italian Barber shop)... We were a bit busy...Barbers don't have the business to make a living under 5 or 6 bucks each...10 would be better I still cut my wife's hair....when I was cutting, we had a beauty school in the building, so I spent a bit of time shmoozing with the girls learning...the owner gave me good bit of instruction...BTW for those who don't know...OFC was called only for Catholics...and the owner believed it...so that's what we drank...Different times for certain
