Internet Explorer: going away?

Hi,

Seems Microsoft has finally figured out what a lot of us have felt for a long time, that IE is a horrible piece of work. And news that it may be going away gives me the same warm and fuzzy feeling the author of the article seems to share. OTOH, what kind of an abomination can Microsoft come up with to replace it, and will it hold us captive as IE did for years getting updates to Windows Whatever Comes Next?

Enquiring minds want to know!

IE got sued over IE many years ago and they were forced to separate the browser from their Operating System as an integrated component. Ever since that they've just not invested much in IE. I've been using other browsers for years, so it doesn't bother me one iota... Just a lot less security updates!

I notice it will require windows 10 to use the new browser, so they are only updating to make you buy move of their worthless software.

I suppose I'm not the most demanding of my browser so IE has always sufficed for me.

One trend in recent years in my business it the move to using web based connections to control systems. Initially if you didn't have IE, you couldn't play. One brand didn't budge from this until just a few years ago.

Now, several tech folks have told me that some recent changes in IE have made it impossible to use it effectively with their systems. I usually use Firefox for those.

Still, there are some very large companies that will not allow anything but IE as a browser on their systems. This is becoming an issue with some of the control systems, but their IT folks will not budge. Perhaps the "loss" of IE isn't a bad thing, it did serve it purpose for decades. It just didn't really keep up with the times.

I'm wondering how some folks who have never used anything but IE will fair with newer browsers. Not all folks are really all that good at learning "new" software.

Microsoft Spartan is GREAT. I like firefox and chrome too, Chrome is about the best, fastest, safest, lightest web browser right now.

+1 for google chrome, use it on my PC, of course my chromebook, and works much better than Safari on my iphone 6.

I guess I have not been too choosy as I have used IE ever since GO. Up to now... as most websites are not responding with it, SO, today is going to be my first day trying to get use to FireFox

I switched to Firefox when IE still didn't have 'tabs'. The hardest part of the switch was getting used to using the tab feature.
If you have been using a version of IE with tabs, the switch should be pretty easy.

Edit to add, be sure to get Adblock Plus and Ghostery for Firefox or Chrome. They save a LOT of annoyance.

There are other browsers out there (not Chrome) that are not so much spyware. Google earns it's money by tracking you and everything you say or do with its products.

There are other browsers - like Opera, http://www.opera.com/
that are fast and don't make spying on you their first priority. Second is Firefox.
