Had a fire and the cylinder of my 44 mag stainless Vaquero is a mess. Can I use a blackhawk cylinder?

Can't help with the question, but I will tell you something about the fire smoke and soot question that you don't know,

Use a cleaner that is designed for black powder residue. Regular cleaners like Hoppes and such are not strong enough to clean it clean. I had a house fire last Feb and used some Hoppes on a couple of things till it ran out then figured that the Safari Charlie cleaner that I use for my BP would work.

Three months later, I got to see the firearms again (rebuilding a house takes president) and the few that got cleaned with Hoppes had a slight surface rust on them and the others were fine. It is a must that the barrels and all the inerds get sprayed down and wiped off.

While the Insurance company doesn't see them as a loss, the collector value has dropped them to shooters now.

And before I forget, record everything, If they tell you something, write it down and have them sign it that they said it. Get a voice recorder and tell them that you are going to record the conversations, they will tell you "NO", but it's fine for them to record their conversations.

They want proof to screw you and don't want you to have proof to get what you are owed.

Thanks for the info Kanook...I'll certainly try that. I'm a gun engraver and everything - that is left - is a mess!

Gray Scotchbrite pads will have it looking new unless it was polished, then use Flitz or Mothers after that for polish, BUT has the heat treating been compromised?

well it's possible...once I clean on them I'll have to look them over pretty well...it was one of the hottest fires the dept. had ever seen. And the gun safe just acted like an oven...anything wood is now ash of course. But have at least 7 engraved pieces I would like to be able to salvage. :(

A sink full of the hottest water you can stand with dishgloves on

Cup of vinegar

Some Baking Soda

Dawn dish soap concentrate

Mr Clean Magic Eraser for the kitchen

Put item to be cleaned in sink at let soak for minute and start to clean, rinse and dry after cleaning, pack away till house is rebuilt.

Repeat until water get cool (hottest water is best), can't handle heat on hands, or start singing "I feel pretty, oh so pretty".

Anything that has gold plating do not use Dawn dish soap. It will remove it.

Go to Bass Pro or Gander Mountian and buy the Scent Away concentrate to wash your clothes in (that survived) with vinegar and Arm and Hammer scent free laundry det.We learned a couple of tricks that no one would share on our own.
