Looking for Information: Dad has an old Lionel train set that he used to play with as a kid. This is the larger trains, several cars, lots of track, buildings, 2 transformers, etc. We figure the set to be about 60 - 70 years old. Last time it was set up was about 30 years ago and it ran then.

Dad would like this to go to a good home. He doesn't want to give it away, but doesn't want to make a million.

Anyone here a collector or know of one who might be interested? I can forward pictures if needed.

We contacted 2 different places we found online but they were only interested in a larger collection. The set also includes some toy trains that are included. Dad is getting up in age and I have no interest in it. I'll post this on a couple other sites also but shoot me a PM if you want pictures or can give me some direction.

Thanks!
Mike

See what they are selling for on eBay...you will be surprised. Research each INDIVIDUAL car and engine, not as a set. You should have no problem finding someone to handle the sale at a reasonable commission or sell them yourself.
P.S. input the number on the car or engine.

I still have the Lionel set I was given on my first Christmas. I was 7 months old when I received it. I will be 80 in just under three months. The trains still functions as well as the day I got them. The 'whistle' was actually situated in the coal tender. It has a flat car with barrels, a tanker car, and a caboose, in addition to the engine and tender. I am missing one section of curved track now for some reason (probably in another box).

yes, really need more info like noted above, any numbers on the cars, especially the engine and what size is the track or the number of rails?? O gauge is the larger ones having three rails ( center rail conducts the current) real early large trains were G gauge....need more info , or better yet any pictures. I still have my O gauge Berkshire steam ( with smoke) from the late 1940s and many others up to the early 60s.............

Have a brother in law who is a collector he has a pretty nice set up.
One of the rooms in his house is the train room pretty nice. ps

There's O gauge and O27 gauge, the difference being that the O track curves will make up a 31" diameter circle while the O27 track curves will make up a 27" diameter circle.

Certain of the O gauge engines will not run on O27 curves, but most will. The O27 engines will run on O just fine. Both are approximately 1:48 scale.

Earlier pic showing the car with the 2 cadillacs on it. The white caddy is a little dirty and is missing a rear wheel. Will be replaced if found when going through the boxes. No dry rot on any of the wheels.
2nd set of pics shows some toy Marx brand cars. These are extras and we are going to include them with the set when selling.
I've plugged both transformers in; the green light comes on the one; the other has no lights but I hear it humming when plugged in. Don't know if this means they work. Hope so! No rot on either electric cord.

Yes, this is 027 gauge. The track isn't in the best condition but everything else is.

If anyone wants to make an offer we are willing to negotiate. Not looking for trades.
Thanks
Mike

You'd probably do well on eBay. I've sold and bought a lot of stuff there. All transactions I've had were satisfactory. When I was a young lad I really wanted a Lionel train set but my folks couldn't afford the price of them.

Very nice accumulation.

The 2037 on the side of the locomotive is Lionel's model number. See here . . .
