Its nearly 10:45 am on a Sunday morning, and I should be in my pew at church. Instead I'm sitting in front of my computer on the Ruger Forum.

Why? For the past week I've been battling a sinus infection, and sound as if I'm in a deep cave when I talk, and wheeze like a steam engine when I breathe.

I did go to one of those minor medical clinics last week. There I was seen by an ANP, an Advance Nurse Practitioner, who prescribed a couple of nasal sprays and some big blue horse pills.

The place I go to is really nice, I'm seen within five minutes or so. And most of the staff is made up of some really nice, cute young ladies. And they seem to know their stuff. And they listen to you as you describe your symptoms.

Hope to be back as good as new, or at least as I was before taking this malady.

Sinus infection is nothing to mess around with. You need to see an ENT specialist. You need an appropriate antibiotic, something more than ampicillin, and you need at least 10 days worth. The dividing wall between sinus and brain is thinner than an eggshell. An untreated or improperly treated sinus infection can lead to brain infection and death.

Those sinus infections can really lay you low. I used to be bothered by them a lot but haven't had one for many years. I've moved on to other to other ailments now. :) Zithromax was my go to antibiotic back then

I sympathize, I have suffered from sinus problems-sinusitis-for years. I have been taking Vitamin C since the 1990s, Linus Pauling was right. I work in a smoke free environment, live in one-that makes a BIG difference.

Air conditioning can make a sinus infection worse , it dries out the air and therefore makes he congestion thicker and harder to clear, that is why after a bath or shower you clear a bunch of congestion. Force fluids, run a vaporizer or humidifier, take more showers, you may remember the old croup tent, it was a way to get moisture into the lungs of kids with the croup. If the congestion is not discolored (yellow, green, blood tinged) you might not need a antibiotic. A fever also normally is a sign of a infection. Hope you feel better soon, take care.

Bob, I recently had a bad attack of sinusitis/ rhinitis probably caused by taking Flomax. My GP Doctor told me to try Flonase (fluticasone propionate). It is a corticosteroid rather than a decongestant (prostates and decongestants butt heads). It immediately cleared my sinus passages and allowed me to self heal in about 2 weeks.

This only the second time I ever had sinusitis. The first time I thought I just had a head cold until I took a plane trip. Trust me, do not go up in an airplane if you have sinusitis, the pain is unbelievable.

Flonase is now OTC and Walmart has a generic "Equate" version of it.

Do think about making an appointment with an ENT.

John

p.s., Do not cough, ouch. :)

Hello
I have sinusitis and I have to catch a plane tomorrow. Should I cancel? I could but it will cost me a lot.

If you fly, make sure you take a decongestant 15 to 20 minutes before lift off, and again 15-20 minutes before landing. Be aware Pepcid/famotadine is a non drowsy H2 blocker ( Benadryl is an H2 blocker), and it is dirt cheap over the counter!

My doctor prescribed famotadine for me. He said a prescription for 100 tablets is ridiculously cheap compared to over the counter stuff.

Very sorry to hear about your condition Bob.
Those kinda problems are common place here in the east end of our state. It's hot, muggy, extremely high humidity due to the lakes, rivers and creeks, full of mold and all kinds of pollen around here. Most folks I know battle it all summer long.
Get better bud!
