#1 "B" 257 Roberts. Just fine for varmints with 75s and all you need for deer, antelope, sheep and caribou with 120s. More versitile than the 25-06 on the light bullet end of the equation.

Blue, 1A in 35 Whelen. Why? Don't really know. Great caliber for bear, works for deer although a tad bit large.

Greetings DavidMc116,
The 45-70 is very shootable with black powder and lead cast bullets, as well as, modern smokeless and jacketed bullets. It is not a first class varmint rifle, but it can and has killed about anything on the planet. My marlin in 45-70 is my go to rifle when I head out into the woods of the mountains in Oklahoma. I would not fault anyones choice of caliber, but how could you be satisfied with just one caliber? 8)

Nooooo!!!!!!!!

Cant have just One!!!

A 1S in stainless with the laminate stock and a set of nice walnut too in 30-06. A Leupold VX3 1.75-6 mounted close to the barrel and a back up NEGC peep sight.

Then a twin to that in .375 Holland and Holland.

Barring that, I keep the ones I have! My rules, I make them up! :D

My belief is that a single-shot like the #1 should have a rimmed round (no real functional advantage these days I guess, but it's traditional). So a rimmed .30 cal. like the 30/30 or the 30/40 Krag or the slightly larger .303 would be fine and useful choices for a guy's sole #1. That said, mine is a 450/400.

I'd be torn between the .300 H&H and the .30-30 chamberings. Probably give the nod to the .300 H&H. It's just a classic cartridge in a classic design and very versatile. Also kinda prefer the S a bit over the A. 8)

It's not just about the #1 but your caliber of choice and why. Nobody will be "faulted". Right now, we've see choices from 25 to 450 with most inbetween. Let's keep it going. I love the 45-70 but being I can only have one...., I went with practical.

I'm still waiting on my choice, but at least it's in the catalog, finally. My ch :D oice is the #1A in 308 Winchester. A do everything cartridge that available world wide, sometimes hiding as the 7.62 Nato. I just started in 2010 acquiring #1's. So far a #1S in 300 H&H and #1A's in 257 Roberts, 6.5x55, 303 British, and 35 Whelen. As stated before, the 6.5x55 is a long range hammer of Thor. Bob!

I know you did say "just one #1" and I stated above that it would be the K1A in 6.5x55 Swede, but it was hard not to pick my other "One" in 30-40 Krag.

That is a tough one; but it would likely be the 7x57 due to its versatility, shootability, long barrel life, and ease of loading.

I am glad this is just a hypothetical question, because I can hardly imagine myself with just one No.1!
But if I had to pick just one to hunt with, it would be my 2006 Lipsey's Exclusive in .25-06; the one with the 24" Lightweight barrel, Alex Henry forearm, no sights, and stocked with Circassian. It has a matte 2.5x8 Leupold with the B&C reticule and is mounted with a pair of the early(low) vertical split rings.
Note that the .25-06 is 4/9 so far!

If this is what you were asking, you can see a couple of pictures of it here:

Not the best of photos of the rifle, but it was not the main focus!

Sort of like potato chips "you can't have just one" But I can narrow the choice down to one of two. Either my #1-A 30-06 Springfield or #1-B 243 Winchester.

Can I ask, how hard would it be for me to put proper Walnut furnature on one of the Stainless #1s with the laminant stocks? If I buy a Ruger #1 it would be my fair weather gun and I just can't warn up to that ugly laminant stock altough my 77/22 is the target grey/laminant.

Ironic as my Rem 700s (243, 308 and 270) all use H-S Precision stocks that are rather ugly and my 870 slug gun has virtually no finish left on the forend or stock but I see them as tools. The #1 I see is something a bit too nice for brush busting (I guess like my Ithica 37, Rem 541T-HB and a couple others which I baby like a fine watch).
