is having open heart surgery to replace a valve tomorrow morning. I know this isn't that big of a deal these days, but I am still pretty worried. They live in the Kansas City area and he has a DIL that is a nurse practitioner that knows the surgeon and a good part of his staff, so he has had good advice and all. He is in good shape physically and is 68 YO, so things look good, but still. I only have one brother. We grew up together hunting and fishing, were hunting buddies for many years.

He doesn't know I've posted this and is a pretty humble guy, so he would likely ask me not to, but I have to ask those of you inclined to to say a prayer for him this evening. Thank you to all who do.

Big Brother(!),
I had this done. Technically, you die briefly but generally it’s pretty smooth and they’ve come a long way since it was first tried.
I’ll prep you the best I can recall. Surgery is 4 to 8 hours, depending on the team, their prep routine and if they hit an unknown.
Recovery is perhaps 3-4 days at the hospital. My lungs collapsed which happens but it just means a tube goes down your throat (the size of an inner tube!)
The biggest risk today tends to be to be infection from what we were told. My surgeon pioneered some of this so he had more experience and his staff was very open with details. I was briefly diabetic for a couple of hours after the operation, which was ‘normal’ to them. (Still strange to me though.) Biggest question I had was the replacement valve: was I getting mechanical, donor or animal valves?
I was told either pig or cow, and they wouldn’t know until they opened me up and saw the size. Cow valves are larger which is what I needed. Body Part Rejection is not an issue apparently. I spent about 8 days resting a lot, another week slowly feeling better, then back to work and life in 2 months total.
I said all of this to give you details, but only our God can give you peace. I don’t know how people go about their lives without prayer and comfort, but it sounds like a lot of prayers are heading your way.

I hope your brother does well. With todays medical technology, the odds are well in his favor. I developed Endocarditis, and had Mitro Valve replacement surgery a few years back. Thanks to a fantastic cardio-rehab center here, I returned to doing everything I enjoyed doing. I was 63 when I had the surgery. If your brother will follow the surgeons instructions to the T, do his rehab without missing a session, he will be back to giving you hell in no time. Good luck!
