I typically wonder what people are thinking when they ask people to help them choose a gun. This started out with me winning a gun at a DU event and I opted for the gift card instead of the gun. I've got a couple of LCR's, and an LCRx short barrel, and a LCRx3 that is a 38 special that I like. But I have this gift card. I'm thinking another LCRx3 which right now is available in 22 LR and 22 mag. Full disclosure I have a Ruger Bearcat in 22 LR and I just picked up another that will be converted to 22mag. Plus I've got some other 22's. What I'm toying with is which LCRx3 I should get. I haven't played with either one of them. What I'm curious about is do any of you have one or both of them and what's your take on them???

The gift card is for Sportsmans Warehouse and the truth is they don't have either one in stock, but I suppose they could get them. Obviously not the deal I'd get if I bought one through CDNN or Grabagun, or Whitakers, or who knows but it is what it is. Tell me what your experience is.

I would think about the LCRx3 in 22 mag, that way you'd have both a SA (when you get the Bearcat converted) and a DA .22 Mag model.

I think the trend is, gun owners are carrying far more often, and shooting less often.

I'm asked of this same perplexing dilemma often. And my answer is usually another question...What's more important? A gun that shoots well or a gun that's easy to carry?

Back when we had to carry open unless we were hunting, I carried big effective revolvers. Then when we could finally carry concealed, my trend was smaller and lighter, at the expense of shootability and effectiveness. I've now rebounded again, and I prefer carrying a real gun when conditions give me that choice.

So yes, I've still got pipsqueak revolvers and pipsqueak semis that are extremely easy to carry, but truthfully I never look forward to shooting them. So why do I need so many? Any LCR, or LCP, or LC9 pretty much do all the same things, so why do I need the ridiculous assortment that I have, when my preference is a medium or full size revolver or semi?

So my answer would be, if I had a gift certificate, I'd buy something I would actually shoot, instead of another tiny little carry piece that I already own. :mrgreen:


On the other hand...You know Heliman and I have our little snub-nose shootouts, at what some would think are ridiculous distances. Just maybe, if I had a LCRx in a rimfire, I could enjoy shooting it more.

So I guess the final answer is buy what suits you at the moment. That's what I do.

P.S. There's some irony here. In spite of the guidance I've offered, very recently I've bought another LCP, an EC9, and an American compact. And these are all guns I already own. :?

Well, as WAYNO says, we like our snubbies. I just don’t care for LCR’s. I am a J-frame guy. So, can’t really advise on you choice. Go with your preferences...

I like my 3 inch LCRx 22. It makes a nice companion to the 38. I don't have any experience with the 22 magnum in the LCRx.

.22 WMR - using Hornady Critical Defense ammo.

It penetrates just about as well as a .380acp. The numbers on the Hornady web site are with a 1.8" vented (revolver) barrel!
I'm looking to the future when we may not be quite as physically capable as we are now. :shock:
The LCRx in .22 mag. with the Hornady Critical Defense ammo and some Tuff Product Quick Strips would be a good alternative to a higher powered gun for an 'older' individual. The LCR triggers are easier to work than the Smith's. The larger grip on the LCRx is much easier to hold. I've put that grip on my other LCR guns. I don't have a .22 mag but I have the .357 mag, the 327mag and the 9mm versions. The .327 mag is snappy and pretty darn powerful, and does offer 6 rounds to the .38's 5.

Get something fun. I like the looks of the NAA hog leg. Looks like it would be fun to shoot. I've a NAA mini as a last chance, it's got it's warts but it's fun.

If you go with the NNA mini, I'd suggest the swing out cylinder or the top break. MUCH easier to use.
