6 round guns commonly go for $800.0 to $950.00
on the auctions and I have never seen one in a gun shop
or gun show.

The five round guns as everyone knows (25 made) are very
rare and the last one I seen sell on an auction site went for
$1200.00+. I think the owner has the two variations mixed up.

hmmm, how many 44mags can launch a 425gr WFN at 1200 fps? I personally think the Alaskan 44 and 454 are a waste. The 480 is by far the best choice for what the gun is intended for. Up close and personal bear protection. With the 480 you get a heavier bigger boolit with less pressure meaning less recoil.

This one is way overpriced for sure.
 
The seller is from Charlotte NC. He got the trigger work, (supposidily) from Hyatt's gun shop. Hyatt's has a local reputation for high prices,, and such stuff. I bet he got the gun from them,, and has been fed their brand of BS.

Actually, pressure has do direct effect on recoil. Recoil results from bullet mass and velocity. A given combination of mass and velocity can be achieved by some cartridges better than others, but there will be no difference in recoil.

To put it another way:
Consider two guns of identical weight, dimensions, barrel length, grip shape, etc. One is a smaller caliber with a long bullet of say, 200 gr. The other (hypothetical) gun is a much larger caliber that also shoots a 200 gr. bullet. Obviously this bullet will be much shorter than the first. The difference in sectional density between these two bullets will have major implications to their respective external balistics and terminal performance, and the shorter/fatter bullet will require less pressure to achieve a given velocity. But there will be no difference in recoil between the two.

200 gr. @ 1200 fps = a certain level of recoil, regardless of how it gets there.

Pressure is an important consideration for many things, but not for recoil.

Damn straight!

I have no personal experience with the 480 Ruger, but to launch a 425 grain bullet at 1200 fps is going to generate a considerable amount of recoil.

I seriously question that more than 1 in 10 people can handle that much recoil and still be effective in regards to hitting the target.
 
425's@1200fps (7½") in the .480 are much more pleasant than 240's@1500fps out of the .44Mag. Recoil velocity has much to do with "felt recoil" and the big slow cast bullet offers just a big shove, rather than a quick snap. I agree that the .480, launching the big 420-430gr cast bullets at whatever velocity they achieve in the short barrel will be FAR more pleasant to shoot than any full-snort .454 load. Hands down. Even if we only get 900-1000fps out of it, it will still penetrate like a freight train and make a deeper, larger hole than anything smaller and/or faster.

I agree completely. I was surprised the first time I shot a 45 ACP. My previous experience had been with 9mm, 40 S&W, and revolvers (mainly .357), and I found the slow 230 grain 45's to be quite pleasant.
My point in the earlier post was that recoil is a product of bullet weight and velocity; pressure has no direct bearing on it.

I think you still don't get it. "Extended" recoil results from a slower bullet, not from lower chamber pressure. It may seem purely a matter of semantics since less pressure=lower velocity when all other factors are equal, but I think it's important to be clear on this.

Also, the fireball has nothing to do with pressure. It is determined by the powder's burn rate (among other factors). That burn rate also directly influences pressure, but it's incorrect to say the lower pressure itself is what reduces muzzle flash.
 
A 480 full size yes but a 480 snub is a waste of good powder it will be burnt in the air not in the barrel!

Not what i meant at all. I guess i should read what i wrote before posting.
I meant the longer case life from lower pressure. And less noise. The noise part is speculation and i am just going off what a 357 200gr @ 1000fps sounds like compared to a 44 200gr at 1000fps.

I think you will find that a 425 grain bullet, in a 3 pound gun, propelled with 25 grains of powder to 1200 fps, produces considerably more recoil than a 240 grain bullet, in a 3 pound gun, propelled by 25 grains of powder, to 1500 fps.

If you can handle that kind of recoil, then go for it, but most can't.
 
Calculators are interesting but the proof is in the shooting. I've shot plenty of both and the big .480 is very pleasant to shoot. Much moreso than full-snort .44Mag with ligher bullets at higher velocities.

"Most" shooters can't handle the .44Mag's recoil but that is immaterial.

All the calculator tells you is the amount of free recoil that is produced.

How one reacts to it is subjective and hence depends on the individual. Some shooters consider noise and muzzle blast to be more significant than others.

In a short barrel gun, I would agree that most people have a problem handling the 44 Mg., but in a 7-1/2" Redhawk, I think that most shooters (shooters, mind you) can handle it quite well.
 
The grip shape also has a pronounced effect on the percieved recoil..... the old "Plow Handle" grip tends to roll, while the typical DA grip is more of a punch.... especially in the web of your hand.

I can shoot my Super Blackhawk all day, but my Super Redhawk ain't fun anymore after a box of the same loads.

Yes, and if it rolls slowly enough it is helpful, but I have found that heavy calibers and short barrels tend to roll up too fast and too much causing it to bite the web of the hand between the thumb and forefinger.

a goatskin glove helps that a lot. A longer barrel, say 6-1/2 or more is also a great help.
 
For a snubby I think the Alaskans tame recoil really well! I enjoy shooting the 44 mag and the 480 much more than my other 44 mag snubs, a S&W 3" 29-3 and a 2.5" 629-1.

That's because impressive fireball and muzzleblast aside, those snubbie .44 mags aren't achieving nearly the velocity of a longer barrel. A 240 gr @ 1000-1150 fps just don't recoil the same as if it were going 1450 fps. Burning powder OUTSIDE the barrel don't hurt anything but your ears... :wink:
 
I think the main thing to remember is the guns intended purpose. The Alaskans really are a specialty gun. Designed for ease of carry and up close and personal "point blank" bear defense. For that reason, if a guy is going to own one, why not shoot the biggest caliber in the heaviest bullet you can? Recoil is going to be moot in the situation. All 3 calibers are going to snap the revolver up anyway. May as well have a 425 gr .475 bullet coming out the other end to meet the big brown fuzzy with teeth and fangs.

They all will produce a lot of recoil, that is true.

I would want to be dead certain that I could handle the recoil and get in a fast second shot before I went to big bear country.

Buy one and try it and see. If you can handle the 480 Ruger, then by all means use it, but if you cannot, sell it and buy something you can handle.

And by the way, if what you can handle is not AT LEAST a 44 Mg. full bore load, then it would be wise to consider other options.
 
I agree with Snyd and must say that if you can handle the .44Mag with bear-capable loads, you can certainly handle the .480. Without question.

In two identical guns?

A Ruger Alaskan in 44 Mg, shooting a 44 Mg., 240 gr. bullet at 1400 fps will be as hard to control as the same make and model gun in 480 Ruger shooting a 425 gr. bullet at 1200 fps?
