Alright, I don't need to do this but it is eating at me. I see parts kits on gunbroker that include a threaded barrel. How do you get this to thread in and seat at the correct position so the sight is straight? Is there a shim or something.

Thanks,

New to revovlers sorry.

I was watching a GP100 "kit" and the barrel has threads on the end by the chamber. How is this put together?

When you have a threaded receiver what happens is the barrel is threaded onto the receiver and then the gunsmith looks at the timing of the barrel. Mt measuring the thread pitch and the amount or roation needed they can determine how much further the barrel needs to be threaded into the frame.

The shoulder of the threads can then be cut back on a metal lathe to allow the barrel to be threaded into the receiver more until the front sights is where it needs to be. Once the barrel is in place, the breach end of the barrel will likely also need to be trimmed down on a metal lathe.

It requires a lot of skill to do and it is certainly not something that can be done without a metal lathe.

Makes since I just didn't understand why there was so many barrels on gunbroker. You would think there just isn't that many people outthere doing this sort of thing.

I think I would have to scrap the gun and get a different one if anything happened to mine.

I've been experimenting with changing barrels in a few P series autos so that is another reason this sparked my interest. Autos are easy you just strip it down and pull it out and put in a different one. Takes a couple minutes and no tools required.

Trying a P94 barrel in a P93 frame. Just for fun really.

Thanks for explaining...

many of the "parts sets" you see on any given internet sight, are usually from a few different "armorers" ( for the lack of proper word) at some PD that when they destroy any firearms, by law, the main frame ( receiver that has the serial number) is the "part" they destroy and strip off the rest of the parts, bag them up and sell them on the internet or at gun shows....we have a couple of PDs that will offer us "parts" from time to time, but MOST are NOT Rugers or stuff that I just have NO desire, want or need for ( mainly JUNK,' saturday night special", cheap crap... as well as there are others who want and need this or put it on a gun auction sight, they do sell

as for your revolver barrel, doubt if you will ever wear it out, and unless you just want to "change" from one length to another no need to worry. When the barrels are 'cut" ( new) they are so regulated, and the proper tolerances held, that they literally just "screw on" and just need the proper "oomph" to get the last few degrees to "top dead center" ( this is called a crush fit) use of the proper tools ( barrel wrench and jaws) for BOTH the receiver (frame) as well as the barrel so as to NOT mar or damage the installation...they do it alll day , everyday and it goes quite quickly and easily for the barrel installer, hell, by now its probably automated, remove the human element???

I like the idea of gunsmithing but doubt I will ever really do much of it. I have a P85 that I have to take apart and change a few old rusted parts for good used but that is about it. This may sound pretty easy to most but it is all new to me.

I was cleaning some parts the other day after talking to a friend who has recently got back into making model cars (plastic) and it struck me very similar. Fun hobby as long as I don't take too long a break between working on the project and forget a spring or something. HAHA.

Changing a revolver barrel doesn't sound like something I ever want to do.

Appreciate the feedback though. Very educational.

If anyone has a takedown manual for a GP100 they would like to share that would be great. Also anything for the P series.

Thanks,

I am actually looking for something that shows how to take it apart in detail. Not just the owners manual.

I don't think there is anything left to take off beyond what is described in the manual?
