How much gold (or silver) is above ground? Our self-appointed information providers would be glad to fill that void in our minds, but who would believe them?
I would say there is much more paper gold (and paper silver) above ground than actual physical metal.

Salt was also used centuries ago. Was more valuable than gold.
Among the things I bought using gold or silver coins:
- One Steinway grand piano
- One Harley Dyna Low Rider
- Numerous breakfasts at a local cafe (scrambled eggs / bacon / cheese / toast / coffee for a 1 oz coin; they happily take 1/2 oz these days)
- Several guns
- One late model SUV

That they can is not the same as they WILL. Again, they have to set up some sort of system to satisfy there tax collectors.
Tax collection has nothing to do with my comment.
So I looked on line and couldn't find a link to use gold to pay property taxes or car registration in Collin County.

That was a great old WWII movie.
Not that old...had the late 60's/early 70's vibe going....and not realistic at all (especially those vehicles carrying all that gold...no way). But one of my favorites and a great soundtrack.

I worked at an electronics company. We would get a bar of solder. The same size as a gold bar. It was actually difficult to move, it was a great practical joke to ask someone to grab that little box and toss it over here. They would casually grab it and it didn’t move.
Anyway I think of those bars of lead solder every time in a movie they fill a duffel bag with gold bars and run down the street!

This is what I found:
Payments for property taxes owed in Texas began being accepted in Gold.
You must use the Texas Bullion Depository, which operates through Lone Star Tangible Assets (LSTA).
The system allows for digital transactions using stored, vaulted, and insured gold or silver.
The state is shifting toward treating gold/silver as legal tender, making it easier for investors to use these assets for daily transactions and tax obligations.
Since 2013, the sale of gold, silver, or platinum bullion (not jewelry) is exempt from Texas sales and use tax.
Gold began being accepted for payment of property taxes in Texas during late 2025.
So yeah, the system is presently active in Texas, even if not all-inclusive as yet. Maybe vehicle registrations will come next, dunno.

Ive read similar, point I'm making is physical gold isn't accepted at Wal Mart or the county tax office.
Turn in your gold, pay a fee to store and use as a digital payment.
Checks are digital currency.
Why give up physical control of the hedge against cash being trash ?

Yeah it does- and I explained that. Property taxes and and everything else under the same umbrella. Someone has to take the time to set it up. Most in Texas haven't- or at least those you have run into. I am certain there are mom and pop places that will take your gold. in Texas. NJ is not even on the list but I have paid retail in gold.

I get your point....That said, your county may take it for payment before long too. I really don't know....What I do on the matter is that someone over in Austin woke up one day and realized that Article1-section 10 of the US Constitution was still valid, so the Governor and his crew began structuring a way for Texas to comply. Now how long it will last, or what becomes of it is anyone's guess.....Just speaking for myself though, mine ain't for spending, or paying taxes, or for trading to the banksters for their paper anyway, so I don't really care who-all may take it for payment. In other words, my gold/silver is not a means to an end. It was the goal all along....There's a difference.

Interesting but WHY BOTHER?
If the world collapses I would think that coffee, sugar, water, tobacco, pain meds, and more importantly, ammo, would be quite valuable as barter material.
Our county accepts BITCOIN !

Nobody rings a bell to mark the collapse of civilization. The Roman Empire's demise took much longer than the United States has even existed. Centuries. All the while, smaller enclaves not only survived, they thrived.
The US and by extension Western civilization is well into a terminal phase of life, inexorably unfolding before us in real time. The parallels to the Roman Empire's later stages are striking. That doesn't mean you should cower in fear, sink into a deep depression, sell all your assets or squander them for that matter.
In fact it's a great time to be alive. Gold, silver, ammo, guns, honey (honey keeps forever!), liquor, maple syrup... all valuable commodities to trade for food, water, hunting / butchering skills, leather, clothing, warmth... etc.
