How do you "defrag" a PC with Windows 8 operating system?

I occasionally get a message that I am running out of memory, but checking my hard drive shows I have about 1.3 terabytes of available space out of the 1.75 terabyte capacity. So I thought the problem might be that I need to defragmentatate. I remember doing in with older versions of Windows but can't seem to find how to get to the Degrag feature on my current PC. An internet search said to open Programs, then go to Accessories, etc. but when I click on Programs on the Control Panel it doesn't give me any option of "Accessories". Can any of our wise computer literate members out there give me some advice on this? Thanks.

I think you can still do it through Disk Management: http://www.disk-partition.com/windows-8/windows-8-disk-management.html. It should be one of the options when you right click or one the toolbars at the top.

However, one wonders whether you are running out of disk space (the thing you're looking at) or running low on RAM because you're running many high-memory-usage programs at the same time (a hardware issue).

Windows 8 automatically defrags weekly as long as you haven't changed the settings.
(1) From the "Start Screen" type "disc defrag".
(2) Click on "Defragment and optimize your drives".
The screen that pops up tells you the interval defragmentation occurs and the current status.

Once you find the defrag interface, be sure you run it more than once.

Just like onions have more than one layer, your defrag program can
only remove a portion of the "layers". Each subsequent iteration will
get lower and closer to the core.

Friend had not run his defrag . . at all . . and was experiencing a
pronounced slow down with anything requiring heavy disk access.
Got on and ran the defrag. Took TWO AND ONE HALF HOURS,
the first time. The second time took over a half hour. Next time took
less than fifteen minutes. I went home, but told him to keep running
it until it completed in less than five minutes (I doubt he did).
He called me the next day and said the machine was running MUCH
faster.

Running out of memory notices refer to RAM [Read Only Memory], not your Hard drive space.

You should be able to add RAM assuming your system isn't maxed out ... it shouldn't be expensive. If your system is maxed out your choices probably boil down to getting a new computer or less multitasking or eliminating the application that's hogging your memory. It's also possible to utilize part of your HDD as "virtual memory" which may solve your problem.

If you don't understand the terms you probably need to find a local geek.

I agree you are probably running out of RAM. It's actually fairly easy to put in new RAM or have somebody do it. You may have programs running in the background that are hogging it. It should be easy to find out how much you have. I forget exactly where to look, but it should be easy to search how.

RAM: Random Access Memory is memory and disc is secondary storage,I believe. You may need more RAM added to your motherboard if it's not at max already.

I'll try the above. Today my PC stopped communicating through my wifi to my printer (although I can still print directly from my Iphone wirelessly) so maybe the PC is starting to go down the tubes.

You may just have a bunch of left over internet files on your computer that need to be cleaned up, if so you should download, install, and run ccleaner, it is available free at http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

If you still want to defrag your hard drive this is a good program that is free also http://www.piriform.com/defraggler

If you need a new computer or a budget priced referbished one try these guys http://www.frys.com/ads/page15
