I moved with my family from south of Houston to north of Dallas in 1980 before my 6th birthday and was shocked to find no TG&Y in Lewisville, Highland Village, or Flower Mound. We did have an M. E. Moses and later a Gibson's but no TG&Y like we had in League City. What about y'all?

We had one, it was like a Walmart. They turned into a store called AIM for the Best. It closed and I think maybe that store became a Walmart. Been a while so I can't remember exactly.

We had a TG&Y in Abilene, TX in the '70's. It was like an early Kmart. I remember we called it Toys, Games, and Yoyos.
I remember the Otasco in Hobart, OK in the early '80's. I think that actually stood for Oklahoma Tire and Supply Company.

Y'all left out Otasco.
Boy that's a blast from the past! I knew a couple of folks who worked there many years. It was shocking how quickly it folded once it began to unravel. We were headed out to Colorado a few years ago and I almost ran off the road when I saw a still open OTASCO. Looks like it is still there.

So every day someone mentions a store I have never heard of. It's no big deal. But when I do people pile on Texas? Must be envy. BTW, TG&Y was founded in OKC. No one piles on Okies.

At its peak, TG&Y operated over 900 stores across 29 states. The chain struggled to compete with larger retailers like Walmart and Kmart, leading to store closures and rebranding attempts. By February 2002, TG&Y was liquidated.

The only remaining one of those 'olden days' food stores in my area is HyVee and they have stores scattered all over Iowa and north MO. At one time IGA was a competitor, but I can't remember seeing an IGA for decades. Like JC Penny, they just drifted off into the sunset.

We had a TG&Y here in Alabama. I used to buy .22 ammo there. Also bought a Mk X Mauser .30-06 there for $165 in about 1977. My wife's little sister called it G-M-A-Y for some reason. 😆
In New Mexico, we had stores called Yellow Front - anyone else remember those? Ours in Silver City had a pretty good little sporting goods section including reloading components.
I think IGA still exists? I think I've seen one fairly recently. It was our grocery store in the little rice field town where we lived in Arkansas 1990-96.

TG&Y were all over in the 70's, they were what I would compare to Dollar General or Family Dollar stores of today.

They decided they needed a more upscale type store line so they started the AIM stores... what I would compare to a Dillard's, Macy's or similar.

The downward spiral started soon after that..... for various reasons.....

A friend bought a model 700 in the TG&Y in Baton Rouge. About in the 70's or 80's.

In Louisiana we had a TG&Y as well as a Howards and a Globes (huge, size of a Walmart). The hunting departments back then were awesome. Shotgun shells and bullets stacked by the case on the floor.

Ahh! Now you are finally feeling what it is like when all of the Texans (and others) pile on California. I never really thought about it, but maybe it is envy. Because as a lot of you are sitting in cold/wet/snowy places, today's high was 58°F.

Woolworths was the best. You could buy a goldfish in a bag and your mom could buy towels, and toys. Great place to go Christmas shopping and then a cheap lunch at the.lunch counter before going home. The hotdogs were great! A toasted bun and a deep fried weiner. Total perfection!

Taylor, Goslin (Gosling?) & Young.

I remember Winchester Model 94s @ $75.00 each and a Colt Combat Commander .45 ACP Electroless Nickel for sale there in 1973 or so, OKC, OK at the May Avenue and Britton Road store.

Just South of the Puddin’ Lane IGA (International Grocers Association) store. My best friend and I used to stop at the back door to the bakery and buy fresh, hot donuts before daylight after we got through throwing his Daliy Oklahoman paper route in the Village, OKC. We’d read the Sunday Funnies (comics) under the streetlights before the sun came up.

We had one of those in our downtown area. Go shopping and it too had a soda fountain for lunch. It was about a block up the street from JCP and one no one has mentioned yet Kress.

Mostly ALL and not Texans. California is an easy target as well as Colorado, Washington, and Oregon with how weird the people are getting in many cases. Yeah, saying Texas piles on is kinda dumb. The whole world makes fun of California.
