I've had a couple of holsters made by Graveyard Jack Gunleather. These were made to my specifications and I'm downright pleased with both of them. That being said, I'm pondering over some of the "gimmick" holsters now being offered.

There is a video of some pistolero who shoots himself in the leg while trying to draw from one of these holsters. He explains in another video how it came about. The holster is plastic, and there is a retention device built into the holster. This firmly locks the gun in the holster until a push button is pressed with the trigger finger! He was shooting a Colt Government Model, or a copy thereof. As he made his draw, he swiped the safety off with his thumb and began to pull upward. The gun was hauled up short by the retention device, so he pressed harder with his trigger finger, which by now had entered the trigger guard, and BANG! he had a bullet traverse the inner regions of his leg. Fortunately, no permanent damage was done.

I recall Col. Charles Askins writing about such gimmicky holsters and his advice was "Avoid them like the plague."

My sentiments, exactly.

I carry my "house pistol" in a holster as described. Have used this holster for at least 5 years and no problems. Would buy another(or 3 at the right $$) w/o any reservations.
I don't care whether you're a "professional pistoleer" or not, when you mess up, own the mistake rather than blame a piece of plastic.

I have one of those - Blackhawk Serpa. Don't much care for it due to comfort, and it prints too loud suit me. Also wears on the gun finish more than decent leather. Haven't had any of the problems that have occurred with this style tho - breakage, jamming, etc. and I'm not into quickdraw games so no trigger finger issues. I've been looking at replacing it with leather for a year or more.
