If anybody happens to have Hodgdon's reloading manual #26, would you do me a favor and verify the following load data? I found this info on handloads.org and it is attributed to Hodgon #26. It is for a 300 grain JSP in the 44 special.
SUGGESTED LOAD
POWDER STARTING MAX PRESSURE FPS
H4227 10.4 11.5 18,600 CUP 752
w296 9.9 10 17,700 CUP 794
2400 8.6 9.6 18,000 CUP 711
Blue Dot 6.8 7.5 16,800 CUP 648

These loads do not show up on the Hodgdon website or their 2009 Annual Manual. If anybody can verify them, does the manual happen to list the OAL? If so, what is it?

Thank you,
C.R.

edit, well heck that didn't format like i typed it.
column 1 is powder
column 2 is beginnig load
column 3 is ending load
column 4 is CUP
column 5 is fps

thanks

c.r. you might want to consider that there might be a reason for some loads not to be included in a new manual or online. If you come down in weight to a 240gr jacketed bullet you would probably find a lot more loads.

from Alliant online data:
44 S&W Special
240 gr Speer JHP
Blue Dot
CCI 300

Minimum OAL(inches) --Bbl Length --Primer --Powder --Charge Weight grains) --Velocity(fps)
-----1.465 -------------5.5 -----CCI 300 -----Blue Dot ---------10.2 ------------871

I just looked in my Hodgdon No. 26. Unless I am just missing it, I don't see anything over a 250 grain JSP, for the .44 Special.

PM me if you would like more info.

Thanks,

Rick

We do have something a little odd going on here.

Dana provided the above info (thank you for taking the time to type all that up) and Mr. S provided me with a scan of his 44 special data (including pages 696-698, as well as a scan of the front cover identifying it as Hodgdon #26).

Mr.s's scan does not include the data that Dana reported. His info ends on page 698 w/ "cont'd 250 gr (J.S.P.)" data. There are three rows of powder listed on p. 698: 2400, Blue Dot, and Bullseye powders.

It appears, there might be at least two editions of Hodgdon's #26, and the 300gr data was dropped/added along the way.

I'm sure this isn't anything new to see happen, i just think it's interesting.

I have printed all the data provided and will put it with my manuals for future reference.

Thank You,
C.R.

Blue Dot 6.8 7.5 16,800 CUP 648

1st load checks out in my 1st edition Hodgdon #26 printed in 1992 except that the starting load is 10.5g, not 10.4g of H4227.

2nd load is off; my copy of #26 shows W296 starting load of 10.5g with a 300gr JSP and 11.0g as max. Vel=794fps and pressure of 17,700 CUP for the max (you'll note that such low pressure loads of W296/H-110 are no longer recommended).

3rd and 4th load check out except for the starting load for 2400 is 9.0g and the starting load for Blue Dot is 7.0g.

HTH,
